One of my favorite inventions of 2023 is this solar panels that you ride over in Europe companies are actually building cycle Pathways out of solar panels how much better is that than just concrete paths hello my friends welcome to the channel I’m Sam Evans you’re watching the electric bking great to see you

Thank you for tuning in hope you an amazing 2023 this is one of my favorite things I saw in 2023 there’s been a lot of amazing new Innovations new inventions we’ve got you know roads where you can charge your car while you drive and now we know Tesla is

Working on having that kind of inductive charging there’s been some incredible technological innovations this year but this was one of my top three personal favorites very simple what this essentially means is that the pathway you normally ride down it made of concrete it’s not very environmentally friendly concrete is

Actually pretty bad for the environment but what about making uh a pathway out of solar panels well doesn’t quite work that way now these paths kind of just look like a normal pathway but they’re actually solar and the thing is not only are they incredibly good for harnessing

Energy from the Sun but they’re also really good to ride on they’re very very very smooth and this is one of the things that makes riding much more enjoyable these photovoltaic panels seamlessly adhere to existing surfaces like roads bicycle paths and parking lots and they eliminate the need for

Extensive civil engineering projects now here in Australia we’ve been actually doing this for quite a few years in fact many of the pathways here in Australia people don’t realize are actually covered in illuminated solar paint and the solar paint can actually in fact even charge the lights nearby and those

Lights and those that paint actually light up at night using just energy from the Sun aiming to advance a more sustainable future though the Netherlands has debuted cycling paths lined with photo volic cells to harness solar energy and it said that these pathways are soon to be rolled out in a

Number of countries in Europe two of the country cycling pars were installed with photo volte coding by a construction company called colas and B Royal group under its wway project with a surface area of 1,000 s met each they were commissioned by the pro provinces of

North bant and North Holland and this is the first project of this scale in the country set a statement by The Firm if you’ve been in the Netherlands I rode my bike there for a few weeks Roe from one side of the Netherlands to the other when I was riding around the world

You’ll know that there’s cycling Pathways everywhere and cyclists don’t really ride on the roads there in fact people if you see a cyclist on the roads it’s going to be someone like me who doesn’t understand that it’s the adequate in the Netherlands to not ride on the road to only ride on cycle

Pathways they’re not bad but I personally think it’s such a better idea to actually have Pathways that are being used because you’ve got the heat from the Sun coming down heating up the concrete it’s just doing absolutely nothing but if you’re heting up solar Pathways well you can then use all that

Energy to do things like charge your electric car or even charge your electric bike for example the Netherlands is renowned for its expansive cycling infrastructure and it stands at the Forefront of the global cycling network with an impressive expans of 21, 747 mil or 35,000 km of cycling tracks

And it can be a bit confusing I had to buy numerous maps in the Netherlands to link them all up and work out how to get from one area to another to another is probably apps that you can do that with now because I was I was there about 12

Years ago it’s quite a while ago however this huge Network reflects the Netherlands commitment to sustainable transportation and it presents a unique opportunity for transformative initiatives concerning harnessing renewable energy it also shows you really the commitment the people in the Netherlands have to using sustainable transport not even buying a car

Necessarily I think it’s an even better option if you don’t need a car buy an electric bicycle buy a bicycle that’s what people do in the Netherlands even when it’s really even when it’s rainy and cold people in the Netherlands they just go you know it’s fine we can ride

Today there’s no reason not to I really love that mindset and that attitude wway has a new novel solar panel technology with remarkable thinness it’s only millimeters thick and it’s also very very strong these photov voltic panels adhere seamlessly to surfaces such as roads bicycle paths and

Parking lots and they eliminate the need for extensive civil engineering projects the technology allows electricity generation without encroaching upon agricultural land or disrupting natural landscapes so you know it’s true that now we we have these solar Farms which some people say are an Isa uh but you know if we just covered

All our Pathways and roads with something like this we may not need to build out these huge solar Farms this could be an alternative each panel comprises traditional photovoltaic cells that efficiently convert solar into electricity these extremely fragile cells are coated in a multi-layer substrate composed of resins and

Polymers sufficiently translucent to let in sunlight and resist it enough to withstand vehicle traffic said the company’s website so you can even drive over these Services furthermore the surface in direct contact with tires is specially treated to provide the same level of grip as conventional Road mixers ensuring functionality and safety in

This Innovative solar infrastructure and from what I can tell these surfaces are actually fairly smooth so you’re going to get less rolling resistance it’s going to make a nicer path and nicer surface to actually ride on in the Netherlands South Holland North Brand and North Holland provinces they’re

Collaborating on a unified program to roll out this these solar panels on most or many of the py Pathways in those areas the primary objective they say is to generate sustainable electricity by leveraging existing Road space without the necessity for additional land allocation the intention is to gather tangible and organized feedback

Providing essential insights to assess the potential of this technology the Dutch project aims to contribute to establishing a viable market for solar energy production on bike paths specifically they want to they want to essentially Electrify potentially 35,000 km of cycle ways throughout the Netherlands this is amazing but it has in fact other

Applications the technology actually enables equipment linked to what way to achieve energy autonomy encompassing applications such as charging stations for bicycles or electric scooters closed circuit security cameras connected benches bus shelters Dynamic signs you know having lights so that those lights don’t have to be powered by electricity

Network they’re simply powered by the solar Pathways The Firm has rolled out pilot projects to test the Technology’s viability for many different applications in France a CCTV security camera monitors bike path traffic powered by solar panels and corresponding storage systems which also line the roads meanwhile a supermarket

In France has embraced what ways innovation by installing 50 s m of solar panels in its parking lot this contributes to reducing the supermarket’s energy expenses and exemplifies W Way’s capability to generate substantial electricity according to the firm so what does this mean this means energy autonomy quick installation times

Apparently and scalability open up opportunities to power electrical equipment on the road side in view to provide services to users in zones with little to no access to electrical grids really this kind of changes the world in a way that you know it means so much more than what it sounds like

Having the ability to coat your own driveway or maybe if your your own house in this special coding could potentially be a way for us to move away completely from fossil fuels and just Embrace renewable energy in a way that we aren’t currently doing guys let me know your

Thoughts do you share my enthusiasm for this technology thank you for watching bye-bye

  1. Sam, why do you call petroleum "fossil fuel"? Read Dr Gold's book "Deep Hot Biosphere". Professor Gold was instrumental in developing WW2 radar. Dr Gold asserted that petroleum was renewable and was continuously produced by natural deep hot processes. Plants flourish from CO2 produced by burning petroleum. In my county thousands of green acres are being paved over with ugly solar panels. Tree Huggers have been converted to Tree Haters.

  2. Please see YT video " EEVblog 1556 – SolaRoad Solar Cycleway FAILS, AGAIN!" for a thorough debunking of this idea.
H/T to @AndrewTSq for the reference

  3. You have never experienced winter, have you? 😉

There is either salt or there are sharp edged small stones / pebbles on the roads to have some grip on the hardened snow or even on icey roads.

That would reduce the amount of sunlight that reaches the solar cell's active surfaces, even after the stones have been removed after the end of the winter, because the surfaces would have gotten a lot of scratches.

  4. That is a great way to use the sun's power and put solar panels on the road. What will they think of next??? Solar panel on the surface of the ocean or desert. The possibility are endless

  5. It won't be long before we get solar roads. Transferring that amount of space into solar-generation and then funnelling it to charging stations would solve the range anxiety issue and charging station deficit issue, both.

  6. EEV blog has done some brilliant rebuttals to these sorts of schemes. On the surface ( see what I did there) – it seems perfectly reasonable – a long path, easy to access, etc.But when you go into the details, it is not a good idea. Dirt, oil, vibration, stones, spanners dropped etc. The solar panels have to have extra protection – so they lose efficiency. They will be covered in dirt, water, snow etc. When they become abraded, they lose efficiency. IF a large group of cyclists decide to travel on it – less energy created.
And this will require constant maintenance. ..
Compared to a solar roof, or cover, which requires virtually no maintenance, has none of the hazards above (OK, maybe a snow covering if flat), and is immediately more efficient.
If the link stays, here it is – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obS6TUVSZds
It is worth reading to educate yourself as to why these seemingly "good ideas" are an absolute waste of money – and they always get money from dumb councils, or some form of government grant – because "green"….

  7. I used to think this would be a great idea. But then some people built some prototypes and tested it. In Europe and the US at least. It was a failure. I feel like this idea was debunked 5 or 10 years ago already.
It would certainly be cheaper to build a roof over the bike path and put the solar panels there. And you would get a lot more energy overall. Or just on the sunny side of the bike path maybe. It might protect against the sun or rain as well.

  8. Sounds stupid, building it low to the ground for everything to produce shade on it. Plenty of roof space to power ALL of humanities needs.
