Break more break which Las car it’s already gone yeah carry on it change now no didn’t anything no it was fine I would mention the van I would talk to them about uh yeah we were still okay we were at the giveaway line the van was at the
Giveaway line so you can both move can’t you yeah yeah you could explain that on your iPad also um I’ll show you in a moment on how you can explain and it’s little things like that that you do need to explain to your students you it’s not
Enough just to say to the P pupil you’re okay to go there you’re then taking that decision away from the students that’s why you check your mirrors before you slow down yeah yeah they weren’t uh they weren’t going to stop were they no they’re on the pavement zoomed off the pavement and sit
Situations like that you have to be a little bit more aware of cuz I don’t think you’d seen what the situation coming like doesn’t matter doesn’t matter you as the instructor a responsible for that so as we were coming up to do that turn even there all
Right we we’re still at an early stage so it’s not a problem but eventually that’s on you to spot and stop this person from turning across that cyclist yeah all right like this situation used uh verbal first verbal first verbal first generally all right I’m just going to
Park in here I’ll go a little bit further up and park and we’ll uh we’ll just explain what I’m talking about okay sound so in that situation um if you notice on my car it’s not got the added mirrors on top of those it’s difficult to see without them so it
Might be an idea when you’re doing your training to have one of those top mirrors because now I need do like this for a little yes okay however I’ve done without them for ages and I learned to just keep an eye on things and even just before doing a turn
I’ll have a little lean forward I know that if I’m in a seat excuse me for putting my hand here but you can lean to here about where my hand is without being in the way go on lean lean forward lean a bit more there you can see quite
Far there if so if that cyclist was coming through there just get into a little habit before you’re doing a turn of just leaning forward yeah excellent that allows me to not have to have that auxiliary mirror on top but it does make things a little easier to have
That auxiliary mirror on the top I don’t bother to be honest but I’m going to leave that one to you but it is on you to deal with that situation if you’re ever teaching not in your vehicle teaching a student in their own vehicle if insurance is okay they not
Necessarily going to have a top mirror so you need to get into that habit in that situation before we doing left turn just to have a little lean and a look yeah yeah if you lean forward as well by having your head on an angle you can see peripherally that way can’t you
Do you understand so it’s an important little skill it’s an important little Point yeah all right okay good

Almost got run down ,again, today, as a pedestrian on the same pavement as before a while ago, when a cyclist appeared from behind, and if I leaned a little a certain way they would have collided with me. Surely, it's not on me to keep a look out .๐คจ
0:45 Lovely to see an old 3-speed roadster still going strong! They're actually quite nippy. I don't think you would have caused any issues for the cyclist had you continued to turn left, but they were onto it when you stopped and quickly got past to reduce danger from that right-turning lorry.
Lovely instruction. Fascinating the whole question of when do you point something out and when you actually intervine.
I got knocked off my road bike by a learner driver (I was using lights, reflective clothes, helmet etc) the instructor was using his phone and let his pupil pull out when she couldn't clear. I hit the side of the car at 20mph, luckily no serious injuries (despite the pupil trying to run over my head in a blind panic) and the instructor admitted liability. Paid for my lessons and test with the payout and haven't been on a bike since ๐
Really good! Really good bit of driving that!
To be honest you had plenty of time to turn before the cyclist caught up to you so there was really no need to come to a stop. Unless of course it was just to make a point to the trainee instructor.
Looking again at the cyclist, he was out of saddle as he passed by: probably accelerating. My guess is that he had stopped pedalling, checked to see you had paused the turn, before carrying on past. Only a guess, mind: perhaps you saw if this was the case.
I wonder how my instructor coped. My car learning to drive 20 years ago was 25 years old at the time (1977). It wasn't built with a passenger mirror at all.
Well observed but i honestly think its the cyclists fault if something happens there. And i am a cyclist. Its insane that we have all these rules about undertaking that seem to not apply in the most dangerous case.
Another important point to mention is that the mirror checks should be done well in advance as to be aware of the cyclist and just before making a turn for confirmation. How many people would habitually look in the mirror as they turn the wheel or even after?
Also, you addressed a question I had regarding auxiliary mirrors. Nice upload! ๐
It doesn't help that the Highway Code now contradicts itself on who has right of way in this situation. At least it contradicts itself by saying both should give way rather than by saying neither should give way, but it would be helpful if they clarified it .
To expand on my point about the confirmation check I made earlier, you checked your mirrors approximately the moment you were level with the cyclist. You were aware of the cyclist regardless, because you had just overtaken him, but had the timing been slightly different, the cyclist could have hidden perfectly in the mirror blind spot. All that to say that the confirmation check just before turning is key.
I think the moment you checked your mirrors initially, you could just about see the cyclist in your passenger side window, but not in the mirrors. Let me know if I got that right.
The cyclist also has responsibility tooโฆ.
I like having the extra mirrors on my car so that I can be subtle with my observations, so I know my learners aren't just copying what I do.
I really do wonder if they did that deliberately for a claim. Yes I know it is cynical and to some a conspiracy theory but that was outright stupidity and someone without the enhanced knowledge and awareness of Ashley would have missed that. And I am not saying that is right as everyone should see that. If they didn't do it on purpose then they need several weeks off housebound having a serious head talk
Left door mirror check before actually turning…but I'm kind of guessing that you'd clocked the cyclist on the pavement and were PREPARED for some sort of interaction with the numpty!
I think a great many UK licence holding motorists would not even look in their left wing mirror before making a left turn (those that do are probably cyclists themselves)
In my experience this is something that is ingrained in the minds of many european drivers living in countries where cyclists have priority. So my conclusion is that this rule (cyclist priority when going straight ahead) which so many motorists complain about here in the UK will eventually result in drivers with better observational skills and perhaps even more patience as well.
Miles behind you. Zero reason not to take the turn other than 'look at me…saw that cyclist 500 meters back and Pointless waited for them'
Well spotted. That ๐ฒ had zero intention of stopping. I wonder if their first name is Jeremy ๐ฎ
As a trainee observer for IAM Roadsmart, thanks very much for the tip on how to best use the nearside mirror from the passenger seat. As sessions are carried out in the associates own vehicle, there is no opportunity for adding external mirros to the vehicle.
Good thing the lorry driver didn't misinterpret the situation as giving way to them turning.
I have concerns about cyclists deliberately causing accidents for compensation. I have both car and motorcycle licences and own two e-bikes, so I don't just come at this just from the perspective of a car driver. There is a small minority of cyclists who are aggressive, entitled, and frankly a danger to themselves and other road users. In your clip, the cyclist was on the pavement (illegal), and then switched to the road possibly trying to cause an accident. Was this carelessness, or deliberate?
The way I think of it is:
The instructor has to spot every possible hazard and outcome, and then make an in-real-time decision on whether or not it is appropriate to let a potential mistake happen, or whether to take control.
Chatting, giving detailed analysis to a student and still spotting the Darwinsm danger. That's Ashley level driving.
My Son told he did similar last week. Much to the ire of the drivers following. So I sent him Ash's video on contradictory left turn highway code rules๐.
That cyclist was in the wrong, they were illegally riding on the pavement and potentially causing a vehicle to brake or swerve which is also illegal as per highway code rules of " You must NOT" which are based on laws.
I really enjoyed your video Ashley of your great explanation of the blind spots you were explaining to your instructor..especially as the cyclist went steaming past in the blind spot on his way to A&E OR WORSE. HE OBVIOUSLY DOESN'T CARE ABOUT HIS OWN SAFETY OR ANYONE ELSE'S SAFETY..its a good job you care about your safety and other road users out to cause harm to themselves and others because they are in too much of a hurry to coin a phrase put there brain in gear before setting off.๐ฎ
That was terrible cycling, well spotted.
Think thats the greenest car I've seen on the road ๐
State of that road, it's a patchwork.
I learnt to drive for my test by the naval base hgv instructors, so sorr of got hgv perspective while in a car. The instructor always mention check check check mirrors especially the inside one before pulling away, creeping, turning and general checks, how right he was cyclists especially kids have no idea the danger they are in.๐๐
It appears to me that cyclists are still quite alien to the average British motorist. You will get used to that sort of thing happening when cycling increases 10-fold or so. On the other hand, by that time we could see proper road infrastructure to accommodate cyclists; because 90% of these encounters can definitely be solved by that as well.
Good spot Ashley!! Could of easily of been missed if the cyclist jumped off the kerb in the blind spot
You use secondary mirror? When I was training Instructors I got rid of it and with students( learners). Watch the driver instead is what I think!
I didn't know about that rule about cyclists have right of way when your turning left ? even when your in front of them ๐ฎ …
Cyclist is absolutely stupid for doing that – please have the awareness that not everyone will check their mirrors and beware – that cyclist was not! Accident waiting to happen
That should be illegal for the cyclist to pass you on the right. It's that way in Canada to pass on the passenger side because of turns like that. Also, drivers are to go into the bike lane or the farthest to the curb to turn as well to prevent bikes from passing like that.
I don't think anyone can rival your observation and 'script reading' skills! I imagine most people would have initially spotted the cyclist riding on the pavement and discarded the idea of them joining the road traffic while making that turn!
Another brilliant lesson.
The driver had right of way because he was turning left on a green traffic light and the cyclist was not on the carriageway. He should have turned left and forced the cyclist to do an emergency stop because how else is the cyclist to learn that, first of all, he should not ride on the pavement and , secondly, that if he was cycling on the pavement, he must obey pedestrian signals at traffic lights as though he was a pedestrian. The cyclist was a menace to all road users, particularly himself.
I'm not even an instructor, but I do this lean whenever I'm in the passenger seat anyway.
I feel that cyclist probably only crossed because he saw you stop dangerously before making the turn! Someone following you wouldnโt necessarily have expected you to stop and hesitate before turning and perhaps rear end you !
That last point regarding the instructor in the passenger seat to turn the head when looking in the mirror for additional peripheral vision is also true for drivers as well. Rather than glance the eyes over to the mirror and keeping the head facing forward, a move of the head to look into the mirror allows for a peripheral look along the windows as well as eye movement left to fully check for anything not already seen
I have my anxiety to thanks for extra checks like this, me too seeing a cyclist roaring down the pavement like that i would want to know where they are at all times until i got like at least half a mile away.
Canโt believe the cyclist should have priority in this instance. To me this was a clear deliberate undertake and probably even dangerous riding. Yes – itโs right that we have to take care of more vulnerable road users but if they are going to be on the road, there is a duty on them to also take care!
You had to wait a long time for him to pass so they were probably more than aware you were turning and then aware that you'd stopped for them. For me, this reinforces the wrong thing. The next time they are in this exact same situation they may assume the motorist will stop for them, as you have done, only to come a cropper.
Cyclist had no idea you just saved his life.
Poor infrastructure design more than anything. Wide busy road with cars parked on both sides of the road not the best/safest place to cycle. Junction has faded cycle lane leading up to it, clearly being ignored by most motorists judging by the faded state of it. This type of poor design simply encourages the conflict between motor vehicles and cyclists.
He should put proper mirrors on so he doesn't have to lean forward. Leaning forward does block the drivers observations.
A fiod driver should always kniw whsts going on around the car. Thsts why i preached mirror signal manoeuvre when i was instructing !!
Good one, Ashley. I do wonder if the instructor actively looking into the mirror might serve as a nonverbal encouragement for the learner to take another look themselves? Another win then.
