After visiting the romantic spa town of Bad Tölz, our bike tour continues through the idyllic landscape of the Alpine foothills to one of the most beautiful lakes in Upper Bavaria, Lake Tegernsee.

Bad Tölz was built in the Middle Ages at the intersection of two trade routes. In the 19th century, after the discovery of an iodine spring, the rise of the town as a spa town began.
We start our tour on the Isar Bridge. Directly after the bridge we see the Franciscan monastery Tölz, which was founded in 1625 and was closed in 2008 due to a lack of new monks. The church has typical Franciscan simplicity. We then reach the idyllic spa park with the impressive spa house from the beginning of the 20th century. However, the spa business has passed its peak.
And it gets even worse: we come across an overgrown parking lot with a complex of buildings that is obviously no longer in use. In the 70s and 80s of the last century, the Alpamare was one of the largest and most successful water parks in Germany with national appeal. It has been closed since 2015 due to a lack of investment and growing competition. The area now has the character of a lost place and is gradually being overgrown by nature.
We walk along the beautiful banks of the Isar back to the old town of Bad Tölz, which we have a beautiful view of from afar. The center of the city is the Marktstrasse (Market Street) with its late medieval and baroque houses of the local merchant families and patricians . The houses are decorated with Lüftlmalerei, the typical Upper Bavarian facade paintings.
The Marienstift at the beginning of Marktstrasse and the Old Town Hall with the onion tower are particularly beautiful. At the upper part of the street we find the Winzerer monument. Kaspar III. Winzerer shaped Bad Tölz in the Middle Ages , together with his family. He was a successful warlord and knight who was nicknamed the “Golden Knight”.
In the evening at sunset we take a walk to the Kalvarienberg (Calvary) above Bad Tölz. From here we have a wide view of the Isar valley and over the city. But the entire mountain complex with its Stations of the Cross, a crucifixion group, the baroque Calvary Church and the Leonhard Chapel are also worth seeing. The Leonhard Chapel is the destination of the annual Leonhardi pilgrimage of Bad Tölz, which is now the largest of its kind. Saint Leonhard is the patron saint of cattle.
The next morning we continue through the foothills of the Alps through idyllic meadows and forest landscapes towards Lake Tegernsee. In Marienstein we pass a small mining chapel dedicated to the victims of the town’s coal and cement mining.
Then we reach Tegernsee, which is beautifully situated between the mountains. It is surrounded by several well-known (and expensive) towns such as Rottach-Egern and Bad Wiessee. Through Gmund, the gateway to Tegernsee, we drive along the shore to the town of Tegernsee, where we will spend the night.

In the next and final video of our bike tour we will ride around Lake Tegernsee

  1. Hallo Ihr lieben Radfahrer!

  3. Wow, so GROSSARTIG, ein grandioser, traumhaft schöner Reise-Film. Fantastische Bildmomente. Von Herzen mein Dank mein lieber neuer Freund …

Alles Liebe und ein Abo aus der Schweiz, Dein Freund Hans-Peter
