I bought a 2010 Trek 7000 recently and while it’s OK, I don’t feel like it’s worth $100 in 2024.
My only complaints is it’s really upright and the adjustable stem is rounded, which makes me work a little harder to get from A to B. I sort of haven’t felt the best about the quality of the bike – seeing as how for a little more I can have something I like. My primary mistake with selecting this bike was limiting myself to distance and mostly vintage bikes.
I found a lister that works at a community bike center.
They’re selling a Specialized Stumpjumper, a Giant Sedona, & a Fuji Absolute 2.1 for $140.
These seem like more recent and “modern” bikes at least in terms of what’s considered standard today.
My real question is: what should a total newb like me take into account for a cheap bike (some of these weren’t “cheap” when they were new) for short commutes on pavement and through snow? What type of frame should it be made of? I’m a 5’7” student and these bikes have 17-18” frames. They’re in decent condition, but I’m ideally looking for something that doesn’t need a lot of upgrades (esp something that doesn’t deserve the upgrades). I just wanna have some fun with a bike around campus that isn’t extremely antiquated like the Trek 7000
