First thoughts are why is the cyclist so close
Undertaking by the cyclist, not a great idea, putting yourself in unnecessary danger.
Don't be a Jeremy!
Cyclist is too close and initially aiming for a closing gap that never had 1.5m clearance. They then fall back and the motorist signals left. If I was the driver having seen the cyclist fall back, I'd have thought they might be giving priority to me. Admittedly I'd still check because I assume all cyclists are idiots. And so it proved! Doesn't mean the car driver was any better by not seeing the cyclist and turning into them. All at fault but the cyclist could see it coming. It does, however show how idiotic the new rules are: giving priority to a vulnerable road user who is behind the thing that could kill them when it turns left.
Cyclist defo in wrong, and I'm a cyclist
Completely the cyclists fault. Put themselves in a really silly position and then didn't back off when it was clear what the car was about to do. As a cyclist, this really annoys me.
@ 0:08 the cyclist is at a safe distance and the cars are slowing.
I'd be in primary position to stop any car coming along side
and
be ready to overtake the cars if they looked like they were slowing to turn left.
Coming up to a junction @ 0:19 that's a ludicrous position to put yourself.
If I was the cammer, then the car squeezing my space at the roundabout would have had me backing off. Sitting in the drivers blind spot isn’t the best of ideas either. Jezza would have been proud.
I’m not a cyclist but my first interpretation before the analysis was that the car driver was absolutely oblivious to the cyclist’s existence due to a complete lack of mirror observations. However after the full video I understand where the cyclist made mistakes. Still though, the driver is the one that potentially nearly killed somebody so I have little sympathy for them.
My initial thought was the cyclist is riding too close to that car, setting themself up for a left hook incident. If it was another cyclist in front turning left there would you do the same thing? I do ride a bike, falling off hurts and can put you in hospital – I had the shoulder surgery.
According to your analysis of the highway code regarding this, the cyclist should have held back. It looked a little like must-get-in-front syndrome or complete obliviousness from the cyclist. The driver could have better noticed this poor riding before turning also. I cycle and drive, and I always find Ashley's videos very well balanced on these issues.
Given where the cyclist is riding it's entirely possible they were in the cars blind spot before this left turn. I don't care what the rules are, I'm not passing after riding up against someones rear light.
Initial thoughts as requested: the cyclist was giving me anxiety even before the incident, pressuring up the inside and sitting in that car's blind spot. This might not be his first rodeo because I think he must have a pre-existing brain injury. And then to ride into a BLINDINGLY OBVIOUS situation. As someone commented below: "It doesn't matter who's at fault. You're still going to the hospital." In summary, he set the idiot dial to 11.
Stupid. The cyclist should have been in primary position anyway and not trying to overtake on the left. My cycling instincts kicked in at the first junction after the roundabout. Wouldn't have been at all surprised if the driver suddenly turned left their without indicating. Why anyone would put themselves in this position is beyond me.
At 1:29 the cyclist is far too close to the kerb. Is he really thinking he can overtake the car on the left? How foolish! He should, at this point, be in prime position, centrally behind the car. It is a 20 mph limit, and if the car is sticking to that, and if the cyclist thinks he can go faster, he should overtake on the right if and when it is safe.
Cyclists going to fast and illegal trying to undertake the car , and he didn't see the car indicating
A ridiculous contradiction of the Highway Code. But how stupid was that cyclist.
On that very Twitter thread, the cyclist says he thought the driver was going to turn at the junction and not pull on to the shop forecourt.
Initial thoughts: Cyclist totally at fault.
Driver gave a clear indication and the cyclist was behind. The cyclist should have staying back.
Shame that unregistered, uninsured and unaccountable cyclists are now golden and always in the right even when they are wrong.
When I'm cycling I hold back as deffo don't want knocked off by a car
So predictable and preventable, was it done on purpose?
If I was the cyclist, I wouldn't have sat in that person's blind spot for so long, and I certainly won't go down someone's lefthand side unless I was certain I had been seen, or that they weren't going to move (i.e. in stationary traffic).
If I was the car, I'd hope that I was aware enough to know the cyclist was there and would have let them pass on the inside before I turned (if they wanted to).
Cyclists are so annoying lol
39 seconds in, I don't think the car had any idea the cyclist was there. Said cyclist was sat in the blind spot the whole clip.
I was going to have a rant about undertaking here but I give up. Whatever the rules are there's no one enforcing them so just do what want and chaos prevail. 😢
Always act like your invisible on a bike
From some perspectives, some drivers will view the passing on the left as an undertake, which could make them not-expect a cyclist to be there. Another view is that it is more akin to a lane that is being "cut" in situations like this, which is obviously putting cyclists in danger. It feels as if there's a mismatch in the rules currently or perhaps a lack of driver training in this regard, but a safe solution seems more difficult to find.
No one other than learners are reading the highway code. Undertake at your own risk, your life is in your hands. Always been the case in the UK.
If you’re going to be riding primary and keeping up with cars like this, then don’t tailgate or try to draft them. Instead, stay to the right, so you’re visible in their right wing mirror.
As with most posters I've read so far, the cyclist who tried to go up the inside of the skoda was being stupid. There got too close to the car at the roundabout. Probably in a position where the car driver would not easilly see them, and where they'd not easilly see the car indicating.
To think it would be safe to undertake the car about to turn is stupid
Honestly, I think we need to be impressing on all road users that having the priority does not make one blameless in a crash. In the marine world, if you have a collision you are still 50% at fault even if you had the right of way because there's an overriding first principle that all captains should be avoiding collisions regardless of who has the right of way. We need to be doing this on the roads, too (I think the insurers effectively do it anyway) – that even if you have priority, and crash, if you could have avoided the crash you're considered 50% at fault in any prosecution or insurance claim. It might make a lot of people stop just barging on into situations instead of holding back and avoiding a collision.
I would have just stayed behind that car the way the driver was swerving left and right. why be in such a rush. Also, I like a bit more gap between me and the car in front in case they turn.
Now that I've been cycling in traffic and especially since I've been watching your channel, I always check my mirrors before I signal. I always look for a bike coming up on my right side (US). I know that watching your videos has made me a better driver. Like most people, I had gained a lot of bad habits. Your videos have made me tighten things up a lot on the bike and in the truck. Thank you for making them.
I think the cyclist was way too close to the car and was going too fast. The car clearly indicated to turn left.
