I’m looking into picking up a used bike here soon for commuting a little and bikepacking in the future. Totally new this. I’m looking at a 2018 Surly Ogre 29er that someone has listed for $600. It’s a little scratched and used but not worried about that, plan on using and abusing whichever bike I pick out.
It has a Brooks saddle, drop bars and Avid disc brakes from what I can tell. It’s a medium sized frame which would fit me perfectly. Just curious as to what anyone thinks about that price point as an entry level gravel/bikepacking bike?

That’s highway robbery for 600 if you ask me, I bought one new and loved it, although it wasn’t quite the bike for my riding needs, but the brooks and bars are 200 bucks alone.
1×11 wasn’t stock on these either if I remember.
Great place to start and killer price!
Awesome deal! I’d get it if I were you!
Hell yeah! I’m gonna pick it up today. Go for a ride and start tinkering with it. Super excited to get into this whole new world of gravel bikes and bikepacking.
Buy and get out there and ride homie!
It’s a great bike but you should be aware that it I’d going to be a tank. Surlys gravel/mtb bikes are just so damn heavy. It’s a great price and will definitely be future proof but for a couple hundred more you could also get a significantly nicer bike that’s brand new. Look at marin dsx, nicasio +, gestalt x10 as well as the bikes I have linked below, much better bikes for the money.

Yeah, I think most of what I’ll be doing will be flatter trips. As of now I’m not super concerned about weight and everything, it would be nice to have something to kind of crosstrain on as I run anywhere from 60 to 80 miles a week on trails. I’ll most likely end up getting more into it and getting my gear dialed in the future. But for my first entry level bike that I can thrash and have fun with I think this might fit the bill and my style.
Looks perfect!!
Holy hell that’s a steal for that bike. As a die hard Krampus rider, you’ll love it.
I’m stoked. I’m about to go to the bank and pull out some cash and pick it up. I’ll make a post later after I take it for a spin!
I am Surly biased so my opinion is not worth considering heheh. As far as I know the Ogre is Surly’s it will last your lifetime bike . It will take you around the world and back for another round. With a brooks on top it sounds like a fairly decent buy.
That’s a solid deal if it fits you go for it
That’s a steal! I own a 2017 surly ECR, which is very similar to the Ogre, and you can’t go wrong with these bikes. My brother recently bought an Ogre and loves it.
Every now and then I see them listed for at least double that price. Very comfortable geometry. Those tires are tough as nails and smooth rolling. Brooks are comfy saddles. Endless options for racks, mounts, etc.
Just want to say that these are heavy bikes compared to other options! I’ve definitely become a much stronger rider just by virtue of pedaling all 30+ pounds of my ECR around.
Enjoy!
Just picked it up! So stoked! Didn’t haggle him on the $600. He threw in some extras. About to go for a ride! Will report back soon friends!
Bad ass. Otherwise, don’t clamp it like that
