The only reason I still have my bike today is thanks to the double locking shackle of the Kryptonite NYC Lock.
Neither side of the shackle will rotate and twist out of the lock. So you have to cut it twice.
This reads like an ad because, well, I feel like I have a new bike thanks to this stupid heavy, expensive lock. Always wondered why I put myself through carrying this thing.. but I bought another to replace it.

I’m highlighting **1 feature** of this lock that prevented theft **this time**. Other locks also have a double locking shackle. Some are even better than this one.
This is not an end all lock. No lock is going to protect you 100% of the time.
A few people have recommended the **LITELOK X1 or X3** OR the **HIPLOCK D1000**, due to their resistance to a handheld grinder. **I got lucky, because it appears the thief was using hand tools** (more info on my theory, in the replies below).
Honestly, those are the ones to go with because they’re not much more $$ than the lock you see here… and most thieves know to use an angle grinder. **I wouldn’t have my bike if the thief used a grinder.**

I’m glad thieves are stupid and couldn’t figure out to use the grinder on the bolts/nuts holding the shamefully mounted bike rack.

Nice. I love quality products. I just checked my Eroade ulock and it’s the same; can’t twist it to remove.

Twice this year, someone took a swing at my bike with a Kryptonite lock, and both times were stopped before they could cut through it – once by a kind stranger and once by the security guard at my office building.

I’ve got their faggetaboutit chain lock. It’s so heavy and such a chore. I might need to get myself a good U lock.

Abus U-locks also fully lock on both sides of the shackle – forcing them to cut twice. Both are great products!

They just use a pry bar when getting this notch past the frame. Tends to fuck up the frame but they don’t care
Id rather own two abus locks than one over priced forgetaboutit. Abus lighter and also has double locking sides
How long did you leave it outside for and in what city

Honestly, those bolts should be buried under the concrete or countersunk in some way. One wrench would have every bike out there stolen.
I’m surprised that I haven’t seen a bike with a lock built into the frame. That kryptonite looks like it could literally be integrated into the seat tube.

Off topic, but, I have that bike. Didn’t yours come with drop bars? If so, how do you like the flats?

Does kryptonite replace these during attempted theft damages?
Glad you still have your bike

Why not invest in a cable also? I have a kryptonite New York lock also but along with it I also have the 6ft cable so I can secure my front wheel and loop around to create yet another locked loop around the lock station.

Hiplok and Litelok both make angle grinder resistant locks these days. They’re expensive.
EBikeAddicts on
Ok now go buy a Hiplock D1000 or Litelock X1 or X3. the lock you had cost 1/5th of the bike and they still came after your bike!

They’re good locks, iirc, depending on which lock they also come differing levels of bike insurance too. (Will have to look into this for exact details).

thats a close one. some other folks mentioned Litelok/Hiplok for their angle grinder -resistant- locks. heres a video where they test cutting a Fahgettaboudit vs a Litelok: [I tested the Angle Grinder Resistant Litelok X1 (against the Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit Mini)
the vid shows testing both sides too. pricier but worthy investment if you can do it. ordered mine a month ago but theres a queue/lead time
for some reason the crook couldnt finish the job, seems you parked it in a good place that enabled that

Those locks are great but for a Surly you need more than one lock.

Get 2 of differing types/brands 1 unlock the other a chain, you could use a frame lock as well if you wish and a external cable to lock the rear wheel lock. Up to you but I use several locks now, one isn’t enough.

Guys, can’t stress enough- if you live in any non fictional city with other people living in it do’t leave your bikes outside. It WILL get stolen sooner or later.

Good to know. I have had that lock for a long time. It’s not just the weight that’s annoying it’s also that damn double locking shackle. It’s like a wrestling match getting that thing locked and unlocked sometimes. Thanks for posting. I’ll be nicer to it now, and won’t talk shit behind its back anymore. It’s been “that f’ing lock” for a long time.
