Seems like a downtube mounted mudguard would be the first thing I need to keep the slush and salt off my bottom bracket/chainring.
Recommendations for cleaning the drivetrain if I can’t bring it into a heated area? So far I’ve just been wiping it with a shop towel to get the crap off after a ride.

What size is yours? How tall are you?
Down tube fenders are more about keeping the gunk off you. So if the BB is your concern, don’t worry about it. For cleaning. Get a garden sprayer. I have the Home Depot bleach version. It has better seals for chemicals. Mix 1:4 isopropyl:water. Give the bike a few good bounces to knock the bulk of the sludge off. Then spray the rest off. No need to dry.

I use mudhuggers. They seem to work well for me.
