I’m curious if there are any products and/or treatment cycles for cleaning up and preventing rust. I’m and all year round riding in Toronto, this is my daily (and i mean daily) rider. Aside from keep my drive train impeccable and swapping out winter wheels when the season calls – I don’t touch much – that includes the front brake (i ride fixed).
Anyway, when I saw the condition of the recessed bolt for the front brake I figured I’d better deal with it now and sure enough it was a major extraction process. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for my pedals which also needed to be replaced – I’m replacing the entire crankset and drive train anyway, so whatever.
Aside from seasonal disassembly for thorough cleaning and regreasing where appropriate – what can be done about the parts which are exposed to the natural elements as well as what’s kicked up from the road surface (like salt)? Then there’s the different metals touching aspect of it all and it’s just a hot mess of slow frame and fork destruction. Say it ain’t so, what’s a good way to keep the metals healthy in the brutal winter riding conditions?
That bolt is very commonly corroded because of the way the wheel deposits stuff on there doesn’t matter if it’s steel or alloy fork. Otherwise treat as you would any exterior metal. Rub down, rust treat, prime, paint. You don’t need to do all of that for minimum standard but if you want better results the better the prep must be. Powder coating can be reasonable cheap if you want to go the extra mile. Otherwise spray can for smooth or if old fashioned like me a good job with a paint brush works fine. Thinner coats and some fine rubbing in-between coats if you want a better and long lasting finish. Ultimately one is trying to oxygen from reaching the steel so layers of paint or oil will do the job. Oil based paint AND oil is probably optimum. But if running a steel bike occasional touch up will be necessary.
