We had a really good time once again bikepacking the Tour de Chequamegon, this is becoming a yearly tradition.
This time it was a homebrew route similar to the original but with a few changes to try and ride more new roads (playing Wandrer) and to check out a few secluded campsites and a hard to find watch tower (this was an adventure in on itself).
This weekend was supposed to be a perfect 70f and sunny day but on the way there it started raining, we decided to listen to the forecast that said that the rain was going to stop in a hour and we got some food while waiting it out. Pretty soon we realized that we were going to spend all day there if we waited for the rain to be over so we started biking in the cold rain. It ended up being a ton of fun except for our bikes making horrible noises because all the wet sand finding it’s way into the drivetrain.
We ended up only doing about 20 miles that first day and decided to stay at a secluded campsite that was so beautiful and peaceful, we somehow were able to make a fire out of wet wood and honestly that was one of the things I was most proud of of achieving on this trip. I made a stupid mistake while setting up the tent and ended up with water inside of it but it was not a big deal and I was able to mostly dry everything the next morning.
Day two was very chill, it did not rain and the temperature was cool but not cold which was perfect for biking, very peaceful day biking on the Northwoods with beautiful fall colors, a really cool thing that happened is that we got to ride by a bridge that is on the day one of the official route and I always take a selfie there so I did get to take that selfie on this trip as well.
Day 3 was very hot, I ended up drinking 3 liters of water that day, once again, a very peaceful day ridding gravel on the Northwoods. We decided to try and find a watchtower that was supposed to be there and that turned out to be a cool adventure. The trail that led up to it quickly disappeared and we were left pushing our bikes through the forest trying to find any kind of marker we could find. We somehow found it and it was really cool to see. On the way out we could not find a trail that was supposed to lead us out and ended up making our way thorough a hiking trail and eventually found the road.
All in all it was a great weekend and I cannot wait to do it again next year!
