Took it to a shop their service shop is closed till the new year but they had I think the assembly guy take a look at it and was told it was likely due to a dead chain and cassette. My chain is way to new to have just worn to .5 on its own so I think I believe the cassette is done. Also do I need a new chainring at the same time?

It’s a good idea to replace chainring, chain, cassette, and jockey wheels concurrently. The wear of one will increase the wear of the chain, and in turn wears the other components.
