Andre Le Notre is famous for the garden he created at Versailles for Louis the 14th, the famous Sun King of France. He built another enormous garden at Sceaux located very close by, which is one of Paris’s best loved, although not nearly as well known, public gardens.

I walked through it in the spring of 2023 on the second day of a 6 week pilgrimage walk that I undertook, following the old pilgrimage route from central Paris to Chartres, the Loire valley, Tours, Poitiers, and Bordeaux.

I reached it by following the wonderful Collee verte du Sud , a 14 km linear park that takes walkers and cyclists out of the 14th arrondissement of Paris towards Chartres. It goes right past Sceaux.

The video records my afternoon walk through the garden, which is more than 400 acres and includes vast lawns, a chateaux, traditional broderie, spectacular fountains, enormous basins of water, forest walks and bosquets.

At the end of the video I flag the garden’s Canadian connection. The original owner of the estate in the 17th century was Jean Baptiste Colbert who was a famous name in the early history of the French colony at Quebec.

  1. Now that is a garden! Really enjoyed this video – I would not have appreciated the “bosquet” in the same way without understanding the history. Great video!
