Just had a crash this morning on black ice on the road, somehow both shifters have taken a beating – left one smashed and right one very bent, though both still able to operate brakes and gear changes on the limp home. Does the bent one look repairable or like a new shifter needed only or is this potentially a new handlebar too?

While there may be a bent component in there somewhere, most of what’s going on here is just the brifter being rotated around the handlebar. It’s tightened around the bar with a metal band and Allen bolt. You’ll be able to loosen the bolt a bit, rotate the brifter back to its original place, and then tighten the bolt to see if anything’s actually bent or not. You just need to bring the rear of the hood forward to reveal the bolt. [Here’s a general reference image](https://www.parktool.com/assets/img/repairhelp/lever_drop_1.jpg) to show what I’m talking about, but there are different brifter models out there so I’m not 100% sure if yours is exactly like this.
Just whack it back into place. (I usually do this on the road after a crash);
You just need to loosen the bolt that holds the shifter in place, rotate it back and tighten the bolt again.
