Picked up my new Salsa Cutthroat a few days ago. Due to weather and schedule, I have only ridden it the 2 miles home from the shop.

Was inspecting/admiring it tonight in prep for a big ride tomorrow when I saw and felt this deep scratch/gouge right around the bottom bracket. This is a carbon frame.

Should I be concerned? The manual says even small cracks can develop into delamination and watch them closely, especially if they make creaks or squeaks.

Do you think this occurred during the bike build? Should I be worried? If you’d just bought this brand new, would you bother the bike shop with this?

If it’s just cosmetic, I’m fine with that because it’s hidden. Being right at the BB is what has me concerned, as well as a slight high-pitched squeak with each revolution of the crank. (Will hopefully know more about that after the first “real” ride tomorrow.)

New carbon owner and just looking for reassurance.

  1. That looks like damage from when someone installed the bottom bracket. The BB also doesn’t look to be installed correctly as there is a gap between the frame and the flange. This would explain any crankset noise too.
I’d take it back and get them to look over it and say your not happy about the damage.

This is not good no, it does not seems straight into the frame.

Even for cosmetic you buy something new it has to be pristine or with a discount.

Anyway any damage on the BB I would return the bike.

  3. It will be fine, i ride a carbon frame MTB and its covered in rock scratches and chips.

  4. Looks like a sharp tool has cut through the paint only so it’s probably fine.

But that BB isn’t fitted correctly and might be the cause of the noise, but it could also be a poor quality frame if the BB bore isn’t round.
