The chain was nearly new! After I fixed it by removing the offending links, a kind stranger let me use their sink to scrub the oil off my hands – I’m glad the break occurred in town near the beginning of my evening commute rather than in the middle of nowhere.

I like to keep a pair or two of latex gloves in my bike bag, they get used for chain handling pretty often.
