Welcome to the start of a new series exploring EV charging locations, where we get a flavour for what’s on offer and help you to decide where to visit on your next roadtrip. This week we’re at Knutsford South, situated on the M6 near Warrington and Stockport.

  1. I wonder what the planning situation is.
Nearly two years ago I found that M27 Rownhams (Eastbound), another Moto site, had just obtained planning permission for a major update. Presently there are a bunch of new chargers being installed, this has included laying on a new power supply to the site. The wheels grind slowly.
I will update on Rownhams soon.

  2. Hi dave. I completely agree. I stopped there about 2 weeks ago and only did a slash and dash to get me to the ne t services. Did not want to stay there any longer than I had too. It was really late and I can add that the car park is really quite badly light.

  3. Knutsford was tired and dated in the 1970's, it seems not loved and forgotten. Certainly needs an update. Peterborough Services are quite good with Ionity chargers.

  4. Totally agree with your video. This actually sums up a lot of services across the UK. The low number of slow chargers is quite a common thing. I’ll wait for infrastructure to catch up thanks.

  5. i agree also Chargers on m6 motorway is not good charnock richards service station is a bit better but not much with only 2 chargers on either side for a busy motorway its just not good enough and 2hrs to park is a joke. the best services i seen on M6 is Kendal Services But its only on north side .

  6. Yes, these are really tired services and charger set-ups. Agree with others only for emergencies. I think Sandbach is marginally tidier, not much better though. Stafford services involve labyrinthine roads to find chargers. Killington has unreliable chargers and in the hills, so a bit desperate to stop there. If Tebay is getting an update, it's about time. Burton-in Kendal has a good set of new chargers. Up in Carlisle there's an Ionity charge park at Starbucks, close to the motorway, that is becoming more popular since opening just a couple of months ago. This seriously increased the rapid charging in the area and trumped Instavolt who earlier, doubled the chargers, when they opened 4 on the west side of the city. Great report in the fog and gloom.

  7. I wonder if the announcement by the government, after its study into charging services etc, to require contactless payment but only for chargers over 50kw, was to appease the charging companies allowing them to keep their old 50kw chargers in place!? Over 50kw seems to me 51kw and up?
But then, they may as well stay in place and a bunch of 150kw+ chargers built elsewhere at the services! Lots of perfectly viable older EV's (Golf's, Up's, Mii's etc) can only take a 50kw charge and the Chademo connectors would be useful for all the Leaf drivers out there!
I just wish there were 43kw AC points around for the Zoe drivers out there!

  8. The infrastructure is rubbish too many cars not enough chargers, and the prices…😢. Sold my Landrover EV bought a 3.0L diesel no more range PTSD and paying less to get everywhere. EV for town diesel for road trip.

  9. I noticed that Watford Gap services are going to be redeveloped. I checked the planning permission and it looks like only 6 charging bays will be installed and none suitable for anyone towing. If this is right it appears to be a very modest upgrade.

  10. Any signs that Gridserve are upgrading? I note Sandbach southbound opened 6 350kW chargers last week. Gridserve seem to be working hard to meet the government target of at least 6 HPC at each MSA.
