Starting in the town of Prato Allo Stelvio you will navigate the 48 numbered switchbacks to the summit at 2760m. Make sure your water bottles are full because there are only a couple of places to replenish your supply and they are at the lower elevations. The scenery gets more spectacular the higher you climb drawing you into the ride of a lifetime. At the top there are lots of places to eat, shop for souvenirs and take pictures. Bundle up for the chilly descent. The first time I did this descent I was shivering so badly I could hardly keep my bike on the road. Don’t forget your passport as this route takes you over the border and into Switzerland before re-entering Italy. I have always been waved through on a bike. I can’t imagine an unplanned detour. After the return to Italy it’s a long gentle descent back to Pratto Allo Stelvio.
Total distance 65km with 1,886 meters of climbing.

I got so fortunate last September to ride it car free. Spectacular. Sad not to be able to go back this year.
Epic climb 👏🏻🚴🏻
Definitely one of the most beautiful climbs in cycling, a must do top of the list bucket ride. Though I have never considered Stelvio part of the Dolomites.
i bet that was physically punishing climbing the long hills! Easy to bonk if you don't eat and carb up right!
bravissimo!!!
In which month did you ride that route?
