I don’t have any experience with singles, but that tensioner looks like it would grip much better if the teeth weren’t so short and flat.

those tensioners are bollocks. Just use an old derailleur. You can adjust it to line up and everything.

When you’ve got a small cog there often isn’t enough chain wrap for it to hold on reliably, you usually have to flip the tensioner so it pushes the chain up. This might not work on your bike though if you’ve also got a tiny chainring, the chain will hit or drag the chainstay a lot.

Get a proper chain tensioner e.g. Reverse Colab or use your old derailleur

The tensioner should wrap the chain around the cog- it is installed wrong
