A cycle ride along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal from Abergavenny to Brecon town with the start of autumn colours and mirror like surface in the water.
I’ve been curious about cycling this section of the canal ever since I rode the trail from Newport to Abergavenny in a previous film. We pick up the trail not far off from where I came off last time, in fact it was just around where I sliced my leg on those pedals I had.
The trail is nearly all traffic free with the exception of a short road section where the canal runs through Ashford Tunnel. There are some amazing views from Sugar Loaf mountain at the start through to Pen y Fan and Corn Du mountain peaks in Bannau Brycheiniog (previously Brecon Beacons) as the scenery changes as we progress.
Pick a nice day to do this trail to fully appreciate it and if you want to avoid getting muddy ensure a good few days of dry weather for the trail to dry out. There are many walkers, runners and cyclists in various section to be aware of.
I ran into some rain around half way both on the way and on the return journey, it’s always worth taking a shower proof layer.
The trail from Abergavenny is around 27 miles not including cycling around the town or from the station. As there is no longer a railway station in Brecon town it’s worth being aware of the return journey, in all the ride was around 55 miles.
I hope you enjoy this canal cycle ride.

That bike holds up really well. Fancy one myself š
Another great video. Thanms
Well done – quite a ride that! I did it earlier this year on my Brompton – but not all in one go like you just did. Hope you enjoyed that carrot cake – looked very good – they do a great one at Goytre Wharf if you go in the other direction on canal from Abergavenny. The bike looked just a littttttle bit muddy at the end! š
Another photographic marvel, that tree is something else and you just have to stand there in awe when your stood in front of it.
That was GREAT! š
Totally inspired me to give it a try if we get a sunny dry weekend before the winter sets in properly!
One question: how were the people you met on the towpath with regards to bikes? Any hostility?
Thank you for this video. There are parts of the canal on my 'to do' list. It looks very nice. Some really nice footage there. š
