I’m trying to convert a 2014 giant talon I found for cheap to a 1×10 drivetrain but don’t really know what I’m doing
My plans to get a microshift advent x casette and derailer and put that on because I’m pretty sure they will fit but I don’t know what types of cranks would fit with the bottom bracket in the bike

Does anyone know what types of cranks would work with a fsaMegaExo cartridge and any chance anyone’s got any suggestions for some good cheap ones cause the bikes not really worth putting to much into.

Also wondering if this is something I can do myself using YouTube tutorials and without to many special tools or if it’d be better just taking the bike to a shop/getting a new bike cause the current cassette and cranks are ruined.

Also do I need to get a new bottom bracket or do they stay good and how do I find what type of derailer hanger my bike has cause the current ones a bit bent.

Any advice would be much appreciated cause I really need the bike to get to school and the gym and I’m going to start trying to get into mountain biking because I’ve had a lot of fun on my dirtbike.

  1. If your current chainrings aren’t riveted to cranks you can just replace them and keeping existing cranks. You’d need NW chainring and 1x chainring bolts (or spacers for old ones)

The Mega Exo is compatible with Shimano mtb cranks. Shimano makes entry level single cranks. If the bb is not smooth, you can replace with a Shimano mtb bb also.

  3. That depends. I’m not sure what spindle diameter you have there. there are 19mm spindle mega exo bbs. I’m just not sure if they have ever been made for mtbs or just for road bikes. If you have a 24mm spindle, shimano hollowtech 2 cranksets will work.

  4. I know not what you asked, but why are you replacing the rear derailleur and cassette? Up front, you can do 1x just by going to a single narrow-wide chainring, likely with your existing crank arms unless it’s a riveted crankset.

Bike shops don’t charge a lot to switch cranks which are sometimes trivial, but often escalate to special tools and cursing. That’s not a bad place to spend money. You can try removing, if it’s not easy, stop before damage, reverse your steps and pop by the shop

  6. Don’t even change the front chainrings. Just put it on the middle ring and take off your front derailleur.

This is the easiest solution, by far.
