I went on a muddy ride last weekend and must have rolled through a particularly destructive puddle. Both derailleur jockey wheels seized – the bottom one the day after the ride, the next day the other. Today I’ve found my cranks are incredibly stiff, the bike shakes around in the stand before they’ll turn.

This is a Hollowtech II bottom bracket – my understanding is there isn’t a huge amount of maintenance that can be done on these. Should I take it out, clean and regrease, or is this thing toast?

Thanks

  1. Best bet is to pull the cranks off and inspect the bearings of the BB. Maybe cleaning everything will fix it, maybe it needs to be replaced.

  2. I would just dismount everything, give it a proper cleaning, re-lube and re-assemble. That would be for the whole drivetrain and at least verify the freehub. Wheel hubs should be ok but that freehub may need a bit of care also.

  3. Disassemble the crank and BB. Clean and re grease the heck outta that. Would bet you have a huge amount of grit and crud in that causing it to bind
