I have grip shift sram XO on my longtail cargo bike paired with an x9. Shifts like butter despite the chain being a half mile. Also have a Pinion with grip shift for my long day bike packing/singletrack hardtail. I don’t mind em at all.
Same as friction/thumbies. Wait a few years and it will become super retro trend.

Are they 2×9 Campy compatible? I’m about to buy a set because the recumbent I’m trying to rehab has some that the rubber is gooey and rubbing off.

They work fine for certain applications. Friction is the same. I don’t mind either for general puttering around.

I took a set off of one of my bikes mainly because the grip on the shifter was literally gone. I bought replacement grip shifters from a co-op but still put xt triggers on instead lol.

If we had those in 1975 when we were inventing motocross bikes…we’d have been rocking them even without anything to shift.

I will say I was never a big fan, but then I tried them on a vintage Schwinn Paramount MTB and they were pretty smooth. But I prefer that crisp click with the trigger shifters.

I think those are gen 1 gripshift circa 1991. I did not enjoy replacing cables in those.
Note: I’m calling the road bike gripshift gen 0!

Imprecise shifting? Difficult to maintain? Too complex? You simply can’t figure out how they work?
I’ve got a ~1995 Trek 990 (Trek’s top steel frame model at the time) still rockin’ the OG Grip Shifters, and I still love ’em. I’ve relubed them a couple times when replacing cables, but it’s nothing like refurbing Shimano trigger shifters. I’d rather rebuild Grandpa’s Swiss wristwatch.
BONUS: no need for a “On your left,” or a dorky bell; just a couple of Grip Shift clicks to warn other path users!
