I only found out about the biking diploma that Dutch kids have to get by passing an exam after 6 years of living in the Netherlands! This explains a lot about Dutch biking.

  1. It even bothers me when boomers get out their bike in the summer for 3 times a year and don’t know what they are doing, GET THE F OUT THE WAY….

  2. I actually was part of the pilot project in the 80s, I had been cycling to that school for two years when through still quite unsafe infrastructure.
I thought it was a bit of nonsense back then and still do to be honest. Parents learn their children how to cycle, not government.

  3. The exam exists of a theory part and a rl bike part. The practice part is in my city district. In spring you will see makeshift traffic signs attached to light posts etc with a 'verkeersexamen' sign underneath. For a couple of days the streets are full of young kids in a yellow tunic and student/volunteer couples with clipping boards. Cute
