My dad got this bike for free at his job because it was just locked to a gate for like 2 years so clearly someone abandoned it. I am basically a new rider but when I heard him say trek I told him to bring it immediately cuz I know it’s a good brand.
The bikes brakes are completely shot, the chain is rusted and the tires need air. Apart from that I can’t really see any bad problems with the bike granted I don’t know a lot about bicycle maintenance.
We are planning on taking it to a shop to see how much money it would be to get it street ready and also if it’s a bike I can comfortably ride
I am 5’9-5’10 ish with an inseam of 32-33. Trek says I fall into their large size but I am wondering if I can make this XL work.
On the bike a sticker reads 22.5” and 57.5 cm
Any info or advice is appreciated
(Also when I stand on the bike like over the top tube it pretty much hits me right in the you know what) but when I’m on the seat the handle bars don’t feel far at all

Yeah, some people are probably going to say it’s too big, but don’t worry about that. It’ll be fine. I wouldn’t take it to a bike shop, though — they’ll ring you up for $250 or more and then the joy of a free bike is lost. I’d watch some YouTube videos on replacing V brake pads and repairing a flat, other basic stuff. Or hit up your local library for a book on bicycle maintenance then buy a set of allen wrenches ($7) a short stem ($20) and a pair of inner tubes ($15) and some chain lube ($8). Then you’ve got a ride for $50, or $80 if you need a new chain. I’d just try lubricating the chain first though and see if that does the trick.
