    my Sons Shimano 6/7 Tourney RD/TY300 rear derailer snapped in half (plastic portion in photos)… looking to purchase an ALL METAL compatible Shimano rear derailer and DIY. Cannot anyone recommend a compatible all metal (if possible) upgrade ¿? Novice bikers here.. THANKS 🙏🏼in advance

      I recently replaced the Tourney on my wife’s mountain bike with an Acera. Unfortunately you can’t upgrade too far because the nicer you get the more speeds are associated with the components. The nicest would be 11 or 12 speed, which wouldn’t work with your bike.

      edit: there are still some plastic pieces on this, but more metal than on the Tourney. It will be a huge quality upgrade.

      Any Shimano derailleur of the same speed is compatible. I think you have a front derailleur in pic so just make sure it’s medium not short.

      You don’t need to go fancy, deore would be fine.

      Edit. Acera also totally decent.

      PS you are going to have to index it. (Set it to shift crisply) Watch a video

      Just get a Shimano Altus derailleur. Most shops will have them, they’re the next level up from tourney but considerably more robust, pretty darn cheap and appropriate for that bike. You could do acera as well if you can find one easily but you’ll be more than fine with Altus

      Edit to echo another Redditor: ditch that kickstand!

      microshift til i die. I think the Estes would work if its a 7 speed. Also what was he doing when it broke? that looks like a bike that probably has a sticker on it “not meant for mountain bike trail use,” even though it looks and is called a mountain bike. I’m not judging, i had one of these and stuff broke on it all the time, becuase it just isn’t built to hold up to trail riding. I don’t think any deraileur is “all metal” anymore, but especially not an affordable one.

      I linked a couple of videos from Park Tool regarding shifters. For me this is the best video tutorial series I’ve found. They explain some background regarding the part and then explain how to repair it. I linked a short introduction video one that shows you how to install the cable into the new shifter and if needed how to adjust the derailleur.

      Just in case I would insist that you also buy a new cable. Old cables get stretched over time so it probably needs to be replaced

      Also I’d bookmark the series so you can refer to it if and when something else happens or if you just want to learn something about bikes.

      I’ll say it, don’t spend another extinct penny on that bike. You’ll spend more on shop labor than it’s worth 5 times over. You should be able to pick up a used bike on Facebook Marketplace that’s waaay better and safer.

      I just did a search within 40 miles of my house for bikes under $250 and found several good candidates. The requirements should be: less than 10 years old (so modernish geometry), a 1x (so no front derailleur or shifter), disc breaks (hydraulic is “better” than cable), and it does not need to have rear suspension (and for most bikes, cheap front suspension is almost worse than none but they’ll all have front suspension).

      Something like a Trek Marlin 4 or 5. You can always spend more but there is some value in a newish entry level Trek.

      People may disagree but that’s my two cents.
