Join me on a 10-mile cycling journey through the history and countryside around Cricklade in Wiltshire.
The ride begins at the Swindon and Cricklade Railway before following the old railway track towards Cricklade along National Cycle Network Route 45.
Once in Cricklade, I visit St Sampson’s Church, the war memorial and the site of the old priory before crossing the River Thames and continuing to North Meadow National Nature Reserve. Hidden within the meadow are old concrete anti-glider blocks, installed during the Second World War to prevent enemy aircraft from landing.
From North Meadow, the route continues to Latton Basin, where the historic Wilts & Berks Canal is being restored. I then follow the old canal route towards Cerney Wick, passing the remains of an old canal lock.
The final section takes me towards Brick Bridge on Spine Road before returning to Cricklade Leisure Centre along another section of the old railway line and National Cycle Network Route 45.
This ride combines railway history, canal heritage, Second World War defences and some beautiful Wiltshire countryside.
