Fun fact: That giant mechanical elephant isn't random. Les Machines de l'Île was built as a tribute to Jules Verne's imagination. He was born right here in Nantes in 1828, and the whole steampunk world of the Machines grew out of his fantastical stories. It's the perfect symbol of how this city thinks. 🐘🇫🇷

Thanks Tia! I knew very little about life in Nantes prior to watching this, but from now on I'll think of it as "La ville des chiens" for sure! 😎 I DO know a fair amount about what the French Republic did over time to both unify the nation, and centralize political power in Paris. It's a fascinating story that includes officially moving Nantes out of Brittany, and making it the capitol of the Loire-Atlantique département. Of course, the Bretons know this, and are still not happy about it! 😡🤬
Finally, I have to wonder if the events this summer are causing some potential expats to rethink where they want to live in France. The wildfires are obviously concerning, but Montpellier (which I track) and the rest of the south has been blazingly hot for months. That's tough to endure for oldies like me, even if you're reasonably healthy and fit. Something to think about, especially given that the French government is predicting even more heat in the near future. 🤔
