How would you park your bike here while grocery shopping?
This is outside the large grocery store. There are two sets of racks not too far from each other.
Both are essentially right up against the wall and the area to park your bike in is pretty narrow.
If I kind of park conventionally, my bike sticks too far out and it's difficult for people to get around with shopping carts and things. My front wheel, even though it's only a 20-inch wheel, doesn't go all the way up so it's difficult to even lock the bike that way.
I generally have to lock from the rear of the bike with the front facing forward.

Every person for themselves. It’s awful placement and you shouldn’t have to risk your bike being stolen just to be nice to others who might turn up. Anyone who has a problem should complain to the property/land owner that installed it.
The bike on the right is good at keeping out of the pedestrian walkway. Just do your best when rack placement is bad.
These wave racks are so common and they’re always tough to lock up to. Bonus points for being too close to the wall, that only happens about half the time, lol.
I usually go for one of the ends, rear wheel in, perpendicular to the rack, and try to get my chain around the end of the rack, seatpost tube, and through my rear wheel.
If both ends are blocked or taken already, I’m kinda just fucked. I might try to lift my rear wheel through one of the waves, but my basket is usually too thicc for that. I’ll go and try to find a street lamp or railing instead.
You choose to use a U-lock instead of a long chain, but that means you have fewer parking options than the average cyclist. Accept that, or just buy a chain.
Yeah, when I’m on my bicycle, I literally choose which store I stop by based on what racks they have.
I lock my bike to a grocery cart if there’s no adequate or easy to position bike racks.
I use the end if possible to keep my bike out of the way. If that is not possible, people with shopping carts will just have to find a way around my bike. I am locking it up, full stop. Absolutely complain to management and if you’re a real curmudgeon, you may even check to see if this rack meets local compliance. You’d be shocked how often they don’t.
I love it when people plan bike infrastructure that have never driven a bike in their lives.
It looks like you’re taking up one space anyway, you’re not taking up any extra room so it looks fine tbh
I have to do this on certain racks when I ride my ebike because the stupid wide shocks (which I have locked out anyhow) don’t fit between the bars. I feel like an asshole and it’s one of the reasons I went back to a regular bike as soon as I got fit enough.
Parallel to the rack is the only way to properly lock up your bike.
