Day 8 of the Via Francigena cycling journey takes Louis 92 kilometres from Divion to Péronne through the cold countryside of northern France.
The morning begins with frost covering the ground, while problems with the bike continue to make the journey more difficult. With no low enough granny gear for the steep climbs and a rear pannier rack beginning to work loose, every kilometre brings a new challenge.
The first half of the ride passes through peaceful farming villages and rolling countryside before reaching Arras, one of the most beautiful and historic cities of the journey so far. Its Flemish-Baroque squares, impressive architecture and UNESCO-listed Belfry make it one of the highlights of the day.
From Arras, the route continues towards Bapaume and across the open agricultural plains of northern France. A strong northerly tailwind makes this one of the fastest and easiest sections of cycling so far.
Beyond Bapaume, the journey enters the historic landscapes of the Somme. Military cemeteries, memorials and quiet farmland mark an area that once formed part of the Western Front during the First World War.
After a long and cold day in the saddle, Louis finally arrives in Péronne and finds a simple municipal campsite for only €12. With food included, the total cost of the entire day comes to just €20.
