Ho appena ordinato un paio di pedali Shimano PD-EH500 a doppia faccia e stanno per arrivare. Non sono molto esperto di meccanica delle biciclette, quindi volevo assicurarmi di installarli correttamente.
Capisco le basi: c'è un pedale sinistro e uno destro e la direzione della filettatura è diversa.
Il mio piano è di ingrassare le filettature, avvitarle inizialmente a mano e poi usare una chiave a brugola da 6 mm dal retro della pedivella per serrarle.
Ecco la mia domanda: cos'è questo anello nero in plastica/metallo dentellato vicino alle filettature? (L'ho indicato con una freccia rossa nelle immagini).
- Devo fare qualcosa con questo anello?
- Deve girare? Devo tenerlo fermo mentre stringo il perno principale con la chiave a brugola?
- Fa parte del sistema di precarico del cuscinetto e dovrei semplicemente non toccarlo affatto?
Voglio solo essere sicuro che il serraggio standard con chiave a brugola dal retro sia sufficiente e che non debba usare contemporaneamente un attrezzo speciale su questo anello.

That’s the interface to remove the axle from the pedal body. You need to access it to tighten the bearings eventually and you’ll need the special TL-PD40 tool for it.
I believe it’s to open it up to service it Shimano makes a special tool for it. But from what I know about Shimano pedals you don’t really ever have to service them. Cheers and happy riding!!
It’s for opening up the pedal and you’ll not have to do anything with it for a long time.
If the pedals get rough you can get a tool for it so you can open them up and service them. I’ve had SPDs for years and only did it for the first time recently – mainly because I wanted to do it, not because it really needed done.
Years ago I ruined those plastic rings on a pair of Shimano DX MX30 pedals, they just crumbled to pieces when I used the wrong tool (probably mole-grips). I remember thinking how flimsy these parts were compared to the old bulletproof DX’s for BMX. Buy (or make) the correct tool.
It is for taking the axle out and refurbishing the bearings, which isn’t really something to worry about. The bearings will last way longer than most people need.
The bearing system is integrated to the pedal axle. If you rotate that black notched ring clockwise, you can extract the entire axle/ bearing system.
