🌍 Mainz – Rüdesheim – Lorch – Taunus Loop | Rhine Valley Road Cycling | Summer Evening Ride 🚴‍♂️🇩🇪☀️

Experience a long summer evening ride through the Rhine Valley and the Taunus Mountains, starting from Mainz and following the Rhine upstream before climbing into the forests above Lorch. The route combines scenic riverside cycle paths, famous vineyards, quiet woodland roads, and a long mountain descent back toward the Rhine-Main region.

Starting at 5:00 PM, the goal was to complete the loop before sunset. A small navigation mistake around Geisenheim added a few extra kilometers, making the return a little more time-critical as daylight slowly faded.

🚴‍♀️ Route highlights:
– Mainz – Start of the evening ride.
– Wiesbaden & Schloss Biebrich – Following the Rhine westward.
– Eltville, Hattenheim & Geisenheim – Riding through the heart of the Rheingau wine region.
– Rüdesheim am Rhein – Historic wine town on the banks of the Rhine.
– Assmannshausen & Lorch – Spectacular riverside scenery and vineyard-covered hillsides.
– Vineyard climb before Lorch – A beautiful ascent with panoramic views over the Rhine, followed by an epic descent where the vineyards and river stretch out ahead.
– Geroldstein, Niedergladbach & Hausen vor der Höhe – Long forest climbs through the Taunus with occasional clearings illuminated by the evening sun.
– Kiedrich → Eltville → Wiesbaden → Mainz – A long, flowing descent back toward the Rhine and the finish.

📍 Ride details:
– Region: Rheingau & Taunus, Germany
– Start: Mainz
– Terrain: Riverside cycle paths, vineyard roads, forest climbs, and fast descents
– Time of day: Summer evening
– Weather: Warm and sunny, racing the sunset on the way back

🌳 One of the highlights of the ride is the long riverside section along the Rhine, lined with the region’s distinctive carefully pruned plane trees, creating a unique cycling atmosphere. Later, the climb through the vineyards above Lorch rewards you with sweeping views over the Rhine before transitioning into peaceful forest roads in the Taunus.

🚵 While the scenery is beautiful, this route is more about settling into a rhythm than constantly discovering something new. Many sections are quite long, with extended stretches along the river and equally long climbs through the forest. One less enjoyable aspect was sharing the riverside cycle path with several geese that seemed completely uninterested in moving aside, requiring a bit of caution.

🌅 Overall, it’s a ride that showcases the classic landscapes of the Rheingau—vineyards, the Rhine, quiet forests, and long flowing roads—especially rewarding if you enjoy endurance rides and peaceful summer evenings.
