hello to all, bought a second hand ultimate cf slx 3 weeks ago and didnt see any issue on it, the bike was in near mint condition. today during my ride i noticed some deep scratches in the inner side of the crankset. to be honest i didnt inspect that zone when i bought it. what can be the cause ? i didnt fall with the bike. is the damage structural ? does it affect the bike's rigidity ? does the warranty still apply (if i contact the original buyer since the warranty only applies to him the bike is older than 2y). thanks for the help.

Chain drop. Happens quite a lot. Usually nothing to worry about though those scratches look a little deeper. Probably because of continued pedaling after the chain already dropped.
When the chain drops off from the chainring it gets stuck between the frame and the chainring and gets dragged accross. This doesnt seem structural.
These kind of scratches are caused by a dropped chain, which can be prevented by installing a chain-catcher.
I can’t speak about its effect on the structural integrity of the frame – I suppose it depends on the depth of the scratches. I would assume manufacturers design their frame with some tolerances but that is just my guess.
My Gravelbike has some light scratches from a dropped chain too and it doesn’t worry me.
If the scratches are deep and/or you want to be sure I’d take it to a bike shop and have a professional look at it.
Unfortunately this can be common, but not structural and just cosmetic. Nail varnish can be useful to help with the aesthetics.
