  1. Your derailleur is too small. But you can also ride with a strong preference for the big ring to solve the problem in the mean time.

  2. I think the derailleur is mounted at the wrong angle. If I’m not mistaken the extra hanger link should be almost horizontal, not 45 degrees like you have here. This will bring the derailleur back a bit which might give you tension in small small.

I assume that you have confirmed that the derailleur has sufficient capacity? If so, ignore any posts babbling about cross chainiNg, all gears shall be usable on a correctly set up bike.

your RD direct attachment link (the black metal link between the hanger and the actual derailleur) is mounted incorrectly. it needs to point backwards, not downwards. This will bring the whole RD further away from crankset and upper pulley more directly below the cassette and it will start making more sense overall.

See scenario 1 for conventional setup here – [https://bike.shimano.com/en-SG/technologies/details/direct-mount-rear-derailleur.html](https://bike.shimano.com/en-SG/technologies/details/direct-mount-rear-derailleur.html)

The chain definitely can’t be any shorter without blowing out the RD in big/big. You’re right at the limit, or maybe even a little short

that hanger link is mounted backwards, that’s your whole problem right there. Once you flip it so it points rearward like it should, the derailleur sits in the right spot and you’ll probably find the chain length is actually fine. Easy mistake to make if you’ve never fitted one before.
