My father could have been that kid. He was an Estonian fighting in Poland when he realized it was hopeless and headed West to surrender. First to Americans who just took his gun and told him to get lost. Eventually he ended up in a British POW camp, and years later came to Canada. He said the Soviets were not even bothering to stop and fight in the East, they were just racing to Berlin.
I do know for a fact that the military was informed that there was children among them after so many of them were captured. Something the USA doesn't do anymore. As you seen in Iran.
