Hi guys! I've ridden my Canyon Aeroad for 1000km now and been loving it. The bike shop waxed my chain and told me it might feel a bit stiff. 100k later it is still making this noise. I feel like I'm going crazy, is this a normal amount of noise? Because for the first 900km it was really silent, I swear. Took it back to the shop just for a check up (because I don't know much about servicing bikes) and they said it's normal. Of course I will believe it if everyone says so. It makes this sound in every gear. Sorry if the video is poor quality. Thank you for your help in advance!

Bike shop waxed my chain, now the chain is louder

Waxing makes your chain really quiet, when the wax starts to deteriorate it will get louder. So either get the chain rewaxed again or live with it

  2. 900km later it is still loud … How often do you apply new drip wax and how do you clean it before?

Normal – basically, the way wax works, it will always be slightly louder, especially from cold.

When cold, the wax is solid/stiff. When moving, the pressure of the roller heats the wax and turns it liquid and gets quieter after a couple of km.

Similarly, a freshly waxed chain will also have more wax, so will be louder than a used waxed chain. That is until it needs re-waxing.

In terms of waxing frequency, I’d say very 200km but YMMV.

  4. My experience (not extensive because waxed chains last a *long* time) is that at the beginning the wax doesn’t stick that well. You will need to rewax frequently at the beginning. 100 km isn’t too soon. After a couple of waxings it should quiten down and the wax lasts longer. But it does sound a bit loud.

What kind of wax are you using? The harder the wax, the noisier it will be, obviously. Also the weather can make a difference. If it’s cold, it will be noisier.
