  1. Derailleur was bent or adjusted out of alignment, the derailleur cage caught on a spoke, and that is the result. It’s possible the seller didn’t have it adjusted right, it’s possible you bumped the derailleur or dropped the bike.

Assuming no spokes are broken and the chain is okay, you probably just need a new derailleur hanger and derailleur

Your derailleur hanger was bent so your low limit was no longer set correctly shifting the chain and/or derailleur past the cassette and into the spokes of the wheel.

I mean it rode before this happened so no you weren’t scammed, they can’t be responsible for whether or not you maintained/adjusted it properly over a couple of months.

  4. There are limit screws on derailers so this kind of thing doesn’t happen. It appears yours was in need of adjustment.

  5. Did you keep pedaling after the chain fell off behind the cassette? You didn’t get scammed, you broke your bike. Learn about limit screws and don’t keep pedaling when your drivetrain is bound up or you’ll break everything like you did here.

See if you can replace your derailleur hanger and derailleur

Derailleur hanger broke and went into the cassette. Remove the derailleur and get new hanger and possible derailleur. However if you can’t buy parts now you can actually use the bike as a single speed just cut the chain and keep it in 3rd or 4th as a fixie for now.
