At first glance it looks like an ordinary bicycle, but it works in a completely different way. Invented by German engineer Hans Günter Bals, the first prototype was built for children in 1956. Instead of rotating cranks, this bicycle uses a clever four bar linkage that converts the rider’s rhythmic up and down body movement into forward motion.
Riders pull the handlebars while standing, then sit and press down with their legs, creating a smooth motion similar to horseback riding. Because the entire body is involved, Bals promoted it as both a bicycle and a full body workout machine.
Fun fact: Original Balsbikes and rare stainless steel models are now highly sought after by collectors in Germany. 🚲

💡 Fun Fact: This specific model was briefly manufactured under the iconic name Hercules Cavallo (named after the Italian word for "horse" because of the riding style). Only around 2,000 units were ever made, making it an absolute holy grail for bicycle collectors today!
