  1. Stage 5 results

    Total scores after stage 5
    Patrick: still 55
    Benji: still 55

Third stage in a row with zero points scoring unfortunately.

    Patrick
    Route release: Milan 0 pts
    Week before: Philipsen 0 pts
    Day before: Girmay 0 pts
    Total:0

    Benji
Route release: Arnaud de Lie 0 pts
    Week before: Philipsen 0 pts
    Day before: Philipsen 0 pts
    Total:0

Viestroffer on an admirable suicidal mission today, gotta hand it to him though at least he's trying. I guess you should never doubt the courage of the French; they were the ones who discovered snails are edible.

For stage 6 we're back at Pau. Again. I've been trying to figure out why Pau is so popular. Other than it's location at the foot of mountains, the best guess I've got is that in 2015 they built 104 sculptures to previous TdF winners. So build 104 monuments and they will come I guess ๐Ÿคท

Anyway we're treated again to some absolute gems of commentary on the stage 6 preview. Patrick "someone is going to go for it." And Benji "it's not a tactical benefit to be behind." Both are equally T-shirt / mug slogan worthy.

For both previews each competitor has locked in a UAE team member, but interestingly not the same one. Patrick has gone for Isaac del Toro, declaring in the week before pod that he'll win it by 10-15 seconds. Benji meanwhile locked in Pog and thought this was going to be "a banger of a stage."

Patrick's del Toro Vs Benji s Pog will play out on the Tourmalet. Let's go!

  2. Really hard to say who the best bunch sprinter is rn: classics is Philipsen and then Tobias Lund. But we only saw Merlier against top competition at Belgium tour, Milan didnโ€™t look convincing at the Giro and his UAE wins were against pro Conti level sprinters like Malucelli and Blikra. Iโ€™d rank Merlier, Magnier, and Kooij all above Milan.

  3. When the TDF was free to watch in the UK piss boring stages like this never bothered me , now after having to pay thirty quid Iโ€™m really bloody annoyed , what a bag of utter shite !

  4. Make a golden kilometer worth as many seconds as there are between first and second place, plus one second.

Then can you imagine if EF put Sean Quinn (the good Quinn) into a break. Haha

  5. The GP Torres Vedras, despite being a very modest race, has better streets than the Tour de France in the final kilometers. A shame…
Stage 6 would be spectacular if it finished on the Tourmalet. As it is, it's a complete mess.

  6. If Iโ€™m Visma, I go more aggressive tomorrow than to send Armirail as a satellite.

I try to sneak Piganzoli into the break.

Heโ€˜s just a couple of minutes back from the heads of state, and heโ€˜s a good enough rider that UAE has to pay attention to him.

UAE let Trรฆen go so far ahead because they know he and his team are good enough to keep yellow for a while, and therefore will do the work of chasing down breaks to protect it. You donโ€˜t give him 7:30 if you intend to take it back after a couple of stages. So it doesnโ€˜t make sense for UAE to go tomorrow. It makes more sense for Visma to bait them into working when they donโ€˜t really seem to be keen to do it at the moment.

  7. The point delta between 1st and 2nd and 3rd on a 70 pt vs 50 pt stage is exactly the same, and it's only a few points larger for 4th, 5th, and 6th where Pedersen will usually finish. So it's not like Pederson just lost 20 pts per sprint to the pure sprinters cuz of this rule change. If you all were proper cycling strategists you would have mentioned that in the preview ๐Ÿ™„
