Yeah, no! I got the full polycarbonate ones for this very reason. I just don’t hate myself enough to masochistically impale my shins on a regular basis. I get plenty of grip with plastic pins too.

  2. Do you have biking shoes? The difference from casual sneakers to a proper bike shoe is incredible. I used to ride in normal athletic shoes and id slip all over the place. Grabbed a pair of proper bike shoes with sticky rubber and I feel glued to the pedals now.

If you think these are bad you should ride some bear traps or triple traps from the 90s.

  4. I still have my scars, I remember seeing my skin rolled up at the top of the cuts

  5. Drop your heels while you’re riding. Heavy feet, light hands.

Keeping your heels down will push your weight into the pedals minimizing or eliminating your feet coming off the pedals.

Took me a bit of practice before I developed the muscle memory for it, but haven’t had a shin strike once this season (knock on wood)

Shin guards changed my life. They make low profile guards that can fit under clothing.

I run metal composite pedals with steel pins on my mtn bike and full metal pedals on my bmx.

    Plus upgrade to riding shoes.

You got off easy. No rips requiring stitches

Make sure you get actual flat pedal mtb shoes and have your foot positioned in the right place

The only time I bash my shins with my pedals is when I pushing the bike uphill.

May the phrase ‘Degloving’ only ever refer to your riding gloves. (And for the love of all that is good, dont Google image search that term..)

ignore the assholes who think this isn’t normal. it is. it gets better. just ignore it and accept ur legs gonna be looking diseased for a few months.

oh but also do look into proper shoes if you don’t already have. adidas freeriders are a crowd fav

I don’t know what kind of riding you guys do, but I ride primarily XC type single track and I couldn’t use anything other than clipless pedals.

  12. I can’t see bone, go back out and try again. And/or get riding shoes and shinpads.

  13. It’s going to get worse before it gets better. After a while, you don’t feel it like you used to. Sometimes I come back from rides with blood all over my shins and don’t even remember when it happened lol.

  14. Just clip in. Trade on set of scars for another.

(Don’t wear ankle socks if you do this. The inside of your ankles will get torn up each time you unclip in a rush or miss you cleat trying to rush to clip in)

  15. Little baby bites. You’ll have to throw away a couple of pairs of bloody socks before you get it figured out.

  16. Hate to say it, but those are baby scratches my dude. Wait til you slip a pedal or need to ditch and it gouges into the front of your shin.

The good news is its usually painless when it happens, skin just sheers right off. But later that night…

Buddy that’s way too many leg strikes. Wear long socks and knee pads. And get proper shoes like five-sevens
