Heat is becoming a bigger and bigger issue for Grand Tour season pro cycling.
Just two weeks before the Tour de France, Elisa Longo Borghini saw her Tour de Suisse hopes unravel in the heat.
Having started the final stage just 10 seconds off the race lead, the Italian lost 9:56 on the road after suffering heat stroke, later revealing she “barely remembered the last climb”.
With the Tour de France now racing through another intense European heatwave, riders are once again facing the prospect of altered stages, possible cancellations and intense racing in exceptionally high temperatures.
Organisers have expanded cooling measures, while French authorities have even been given the power to cancel stages if conditions become dangerously hot.
Will we see the times and dates of major races shift in the years to come to adapt to our changing climate?
