Sometimes you just can’t win. Asked a local sub about pedestrians walking in the bikelanes, was downvoted into oblivion because clearly the labeled bike lane is a pedestrian multi use path (it isn’t).
Anyway, this is the sort of stuff that makes biking hard some days, even if you are right, you’re still wrong.

There’s not exactly a sidewalk, so…
Not saying that this is right – I’ve seen an older guy do this near where I live and I’m nervous he’s going to get killed by an inattentive car one day.

People are really good at finding the shortest route to their destination, not the safest route to their destination. It’s the same thing that createa desire paths.
If this person thinks it’ll save them 30 or 40 steps to be on that side of the road, you won’t be able to stop them.
You need a sidewalk over there.

Same reason sometimes cyclists use the road instead of the cycle lane
Edit: we all just want to get where we want to go in the most efficient and safe way. Sometimes it means we bend the rules.

Because towns and municipalities want everyone outside of a car to fight over the scrap that is left after they carved up our communities to satisfy auto hegemony
