Decided to go for a ride today even though it is hot here in Maryland. Passed a guy biking with a dog running behind him who was clearly panting and not happy. Thought to myself what an idiot but not much beyond that. About 5 minutes later I came across this girl clearly suffering from heat exhaustion. I gave her some water but she physically couldn't get up. It was impractical for me to carry her out due to how far out she was.

Called animal control and the park rangers whom I met at the trail head. They were able to get to her before anything worse happened. The owner got a hold of me who was the guy earlier on the bike, but he has to deal with animal control before getting his dog back. For God's sake use some common sense when bringing your dog out biking, hiking, running, or even letting them outside when the weather is hotter then hell.

  1. Yes thank you kind person. What an idiot dog owner. I hope AC gave him a rash of crap before they release pup back to them.

So was she not longer following the owner? Like she collapsed?

  3. Man people piss me off…I had to argue with my 2 ding dings why outside wasn’t an option this week to hang out. We did our 7 am walk but usually go for another 10 min walk in the afternoon..bill mastiff and English Bulldogs do not care what you say…a car ride solved the issue for them for 2 days..

What on earth was that “owner” thinking?! I used to work in a Vet clinic + an Animal ER. Animals will get heatstroke in these temps, not even running after a bike. Jhc, that dog needs to be confiscated from that idiot.

Ive never seen somebody riding with a dog, in the multiple countries I’ve lived. Delt with it a bunch will working in America.

Once again this is solely an American problem, up there with the ebike battle for no reason. Its insane to force a animal out into the heat but also why do you ride with your dog anyway? Everyone else on the trail isn’t comfortable, its insane……

I’m all for taking dogs on the trail, but it infuriates me when people run them harder and longer than the dog is OK with.

The fact that the dog is keeping up does not mean shit. Most dogs will run themself damn near to death and through injury to keep up with their owner/pack.

I’ve gone mountain biking with a border collie that on 4 mile hikes will zoom into the woods on one side and to the other for the duration of about a 1.5 hour with maybe an another 15minutes to half hour of casing every tree around for squirms or playing with other dogs. Then we’ll get home and he’ll want to play fetch until I get sick of it… point being he’s the highest energy dog imaginable.

On mountain bike ride however he is absolutely toast less than an hour in. Less than 5 miles. He’s just not able to keep going at the mountain bike speeds. I’m not even fast. I started in December 2025. I brought water and take rests for him but it’s just too much.

Point being that it’s probably never appropriate to bring your dog out for a mountain bike ride. A slow cruise maybe but not a proper mtb ride. The speeds and duration are just not appropriate for any land mammal. Humans are actually much better at endurance than any land mammal. Dogs need 14-16 hours of sleep per day as well.

It makes sense that you’d want your dog to go and get some exercise but it’s very easy to underestimate the efficiency of a mountain bike and overestimate the endurance and speed of a dog.

Damn, poor girl. Good on you for staying with her and getting her some help and for making life a pain in the ass for the owner, hope that’s enough to get the dumbass to let her take it easy at home the next time he rides.

  9. You saved a life today man. There’s not much more I can say that others haven’t already said, but you should be super proud of what you did. I hope more people are like you.
