Bought this used a couple of years ago for my son. Since then, I got him a Burley trailer to hook up to this carbon bike to tow around my 2 year old grandson. And I forgot it was carbon…
My son said it exploded.
I’m an amateur.
Bent the frame into the gears. The chain is stuck behind the gears as well. I tried to remove the chain but it’s really wedged in there.
It’s all a total loss, right? 😭

    There’s toast, and then there’s this…

Unfortunately you need a new bike. Great time to upgrade!!

  2. You’re fine.

That rear derailleur hangar is removable, as is the rear derailleur.

The chain is replaceable and removable.

The frame doesn’t appear to be bent. The derailleur hanger definitely is though. That’s the metal piece the derailleur attaches too. It’s a separate piece for situations like this. It bends so that the frame doesn’t get damaged. Look for a replacement on here [https://wheelsmfg.com](https://wheelsmfg.com)

It looks like only the replaceable derailleur hanger is bent, the dropout might be OK. For the chain, unscrew the lock ring and get the cassette off. Then you’ll see how damaged the hub and spokes are. The derailleur itself is a write-off for sure.

REI is typically good about getting replacement parts. If you remove the cassette should should be able to get the chain off, but it’s likely dead unless you can remove any damaged links.

  6. If it is just the derailleur hanger, you might be able to replace it. It it is the whole r ar triangle it is NBD for your son 🙂 look at the bright side. You got to buy your kid a new toy.

  7. I can’t tell if that’s a derailleur hanger but I do see a bolt there. Must be a reason for it there meaning it’s likely removable and therefore replaceable give it a shot

Besides what everyone else is saying, inspect your spokes for damage. Dropping a chain like that can chew up spokes and they will snap sooner than later

Wow! What a break. What happened?
Wouldn’t a nice vintage road bike frame be nice tight about now!

Unfortunately the rear triangle looks like it’s toast. new bike day coming soon…

That hanger had one job and failed. I really hope the frame is ok, I can’t tell from the pictures with certainty.

I had the same thing happen to me, derailleur was undrtensioned and decided to live carefree in my wheel. 4 spokes, new hanger and it was good again, but yeah check your spokes
