What happens if we put Eddy Merckx — peak Cannibal, 1972 — on Tadej Pogacar’s six-point-eight kilogram carbon machine, with modern nutrition, altitude camps, and a sports science team behind him? And what happens if we do the reverse? Drop Pogacar back to 1972 with a steel Colnago, a wool jersey, a leather hairnet helmet, and thirty grams of carbs per hour from a steak sandwich?
This is not a fantasy. It is a controlled experiment in human physiology — and the result will change how you think about every cycling record you have ever respected.
In this episode of The Injury Breakdown, I break down the three variables that actually decide cycling greatness: the engine (VO2 max, watts per kilogram, race calendars), the machine (carbon vs steel, aero gains, rolling resistance), and the science around them (carb engineering, recovery protocols, injury management).
You’ll learn why Merckx’s twisted pelvis from the 1969 Blois crash quietly ended his career as a climber, why a forty-to-sixty watt advantage at 45 km/h is the difference between dropping the peloton and being dropped by it, and why Pogacar in 1972 would have been physically broken before he ever became a legend.
This is sports physiology for people who want the real answer — not the romance.

Merckx era dopado, sem mas… Sujo
Merckx has zero chances against Pog in the mountains. Zero point zero, zero.
The only goat is Pogacar
Modern cyclist are basically better than the best cyclist from 20-50yrs ago—the advancement in nutrition makes it a not fair comparison
You forgot to mention that Merckx was busted for taking amphetamines 3x, therefore his numbers are irrelevant.
Big Mig and Merkx definitely "used". We're still waiting to find out what Pogi "uses"….and it might be Orios…
The forced cross-matching is wrong. Mercxx trained his body according to what was available to him. His body responded excellently to such an environment. The same is what has happened with Pogacar. If they were reversed, Pogacar would train according to what was available in Mercxx' time. There is no way to guess if his performance would be less, equal to, or greater than Mercxx. In short, all these are mere technical speculations. The human body is excellent at coping and adjusting according to how its owner wants to accomplish with it. Something like mind over matter.
Now.. let’s talk about the drugs they took back then compared to now.. 🧐🧐
You can never compare past era's of sports figures with today. Way to many variables and this is the case in any sport.
