Hi all,
Thanks in advance for any guidance here!
I'm very much a novice bike mechanic & just recently changed my chain for the first time. My first ride post change, I noticed increased exertion being necessary to maintain my usual pace (I'd estimate 2 extra gears' worth). This turned what was meant to be an ~80km ride into 30km, with my expected pace dropping from 30kph to 24.
My brakes aren't rubbing, I've adequately lubed the chain (understanding this isn't necessary out of the box), and I noticed the rear derailleur cage now seems to be pretty extended. When I'm in the largest cog + chainring (see photo), there's still some available forward swing possible. Could I have made the chain too short? Thinking no if the cage can still move forward. Wondering what else this might be…I'm struggling to make use of my bigger chainring right now.

Did you cut the new chain the same length as your original chain? That looks really tight, My guess is your chain is too short.
That chain is too short. Not that you should be in that gear but that ain’t right.
Your chain is running over the tab on the derailleur. Look closely, it’s not routed properly so the chain is rubbing against the pulley cage tab.
Chain too short and routed through the derailleur cage incorrectly.
that cage is fully maxed out, chain’s too short for sure. next time match the old chain length before you cut or do the big-big plus two links method, saves the headache.
