After seeing how Dutch families travel every day, I wanted to find out whether it could actually work for my family here in Britain.

  1. Longtail cargo bike rider here in the UK. Love riding it for the nursery drop off and general exploring with my young'un. Thankfully a fairly decent converted old railway path or two nearby that act as the main ways to get around. Would love to use it for shopping and more errands, but retail parks just dont feel safe and secure for a bike to get around in or park up at. Maybe one day the UK will get it's act together…

  2. I do ride with 1 of my children but he's 43😄. The other 2 will not go anywhere near a bike for all the reasons you've highlighted in this excellent series (they don't drive either but rely on public transport which is doable in Gtr Manchester). We have some local recently built business parks and housing estates which do have separate cycle lanes and are excellent for safely taking the grandchildren scootering and cycling on (although I do drive them there). So yes it can be done properly but will take generations to get like the Netherlands. Keep the faith!

  3. If only you'd made this video 15 years ago! Would have loved to have taken my kids out on a bike like this. Great to see you doing this.
Seeing the state of cycling paths in the UK makes me appreciate what we have in Belgium, even though lots of places could do with improvement.

  4. I’m good on the roads, but can see why new cyclists are not.
The cycle paths in Surrey are bikes painted on the pavements. Only when you head towards London do they get so much better…

  5. Dream on. The government's in this country whatever the colour say the right things but don't follow through with action. If they do anything, as they have where I live they're not maintained and you can't ride them. But hey, they got the headline of '3 million spent on cycle lanes'. Absolute b…..it. In the Nwderlands they have a much more holistic outlook, honed through generations. We are short term, wham, bham and outta here. Sorry for the rant, this is something that really annoys me. Good on you for sticking with it, but sadly those mums have a good point or two. 🤬

  6. On a typical day, my 5 year old rides anywhere between 2 and 10 km in total. He enjoys the freedom, the exercise and the energy sink. On very long rides or very tiring days I'll hook up a little trailer to my bike.
