I recently acquired the new Restrap Switch rack, which I considered a suitable alternative to the Tailfin systems. I wanted to give my opinion when used with UDH system, so others might not face the same surprise I had.
My intention was to install this rack on a Propain Terrel, which is equipped with a RED Xplr AXS and a UDH mount.
The items I purchased include:
* The Switch rack
* The Switch rack cage
* The Switch full mount adapter
The total cost for this setup was approximately 220€.
Initially, the rack felt quite lightweight, and I wondered about its robustness. However, I had a similar impression with my Ortlieb rack, which proved to be durable, so I wasn't overly concerned.
The rack includes an axle and spacers. My Propain has a 1mm thread pitch, so I selected the 1mm version. The axle is secured with two screws within the axle itself. My initial impression was positive until I needed to remove the axle. It is positioned tightly between the rack's legs, requiring me to gently pull the legs apart to extract the axle.
While the overall quality does not significantly concern me, the mounting mechanism for the SRAM UDH is my primary concern.
The Full Mount Adapter essentially functions as a large, somewhat bulky bolt for mounting the derailleur, but it features a 12mm HEX pitch. This design allows the axle to pass through, which is more clearly illustrated in the accompanying pictures.
My first observation is that despite ordering the bolt specifically for RED Xplr, its dimensions differ from the original; the head is taller, and the overall size is larger.
Secondly, regarding adjustability: to achieve the correct chain tension, the derailleur's bolt typically needs to be loose, with the rear wheel mounted, before tightening the bolt. However, with the thru-axle in place, this adjustment becomes impractical, presenting a notable technical challenge.
My third point is that you either need a 12mm HEX key or the small adapter provided, which could be easily lost.
Given these considerations, I would not recommend this system if your bike uses a Sram T-Type . I will need to evaluate its long-term performance, but I am contemplating using the Direct mount instead of the thru-axle, which would have saved me 60€.
