A cycle ride starting in the industrial city of Birmingham following the Birmingham Old Line and New Line Canals, passing West Bromwich, Wolverhampton and through the West Midlands Countryside to Penkridge and Stafford.
This is a cycle ride I’ve put off for the last two years waiting for the right time and train fare to make it viable. I finally got around to it and it didn’t disappoint me one bit.
The wharfs around the city centre are beautifully restore boxy warehouse buildings making a centre for socialising and culture. As we head through the city along the canals we see both the old warehouses of industry past and also the loud crashing and bangs of modern industry still alive.
Later on after passing through Wolverhampton and the narrow tow path falls of each canal locks and under viaducts carrying the railways we head into the beautiful countryside of the West Midlands.
The canals got quite muddy later on due to the early Spring ride and with the weight of my luggage making the ride precarious with the sun beyond the horizon it was time to cut the ride several miles short. As they say, the mountains will be there tomorrow.
I really enjoyed cycling the West Midlands and it didn’t fail to impress.
I hope you enjoy this cycle film.
Accessibility
The trail itself is relatively flat and hard packed but entry to the canal can be difficult due to steep steps from the road side so an alternative accessible entry point will need to be found. Some steep humps with raise brick steps could cause issues. Some of the later locks around Wolverhampton have narrow slopes under bridges so may need to use the bypass path. Canal trail in the countryside turns to grassy trails which can be challenging and muddy outside of summer or during rain.

Another beautifully filmed vid👍
Who knew that air piano summons hail?
Leaving the city behind…. did you count how mnany bridges? Thanks for the ride
Great adventure and very professional photography! Really enjoyed. Love to see the trains go by at speed.
I find 'Scabs' are great for punctures. No prep, glue or waiting and they last for the life of the tube. 🙂
Thankyou madison, nice ride out and the your music just gets better! All the best !
Wow – another epic ride! This time, I can pretty much say I know every inch of the route too, having covered these canals (mainly by foot, some by Brompton) over recent years… but doing them in one go like you have is awesome. If Gladys is fixed soon, my cruising this year should take me down this video's route, but in reverse. Really useful to see it all again – thanks! As always, the music was great – you know how much I love your piano!
Oh and thanks for including me on the end credits! 😁❤
OMG !!! where do I start? , Brindley Place before it received its make over had a small pub that my then boyfriend (later my husband) used ti go to but my car got broken into and the radio cassette player was stolen. Put us off the place. Been to the Sealife place a few times with our grand kids. Had dinner at Marco Pierre Whites place a few times. When you reached the point of the detour this was in the small market town of Brewood pronounced Brood as in group of birds, when you cycled down the road you passed a school on the left this used to be a Catholic school for girls. Madison you were very close to our home . Keep em coming young lady and Stay Safe xxx
Enjoyable contrast between urban Industrial and muddy countryside. It was good to see so much wildfowl on the canals, coots and Canada’s seem quite well represented. I was amazed you managed to navigate the many raised steps in the brickwork on the towpath, but alas a puncture. Well done, you go peddling where I can’t, thank you. 👏👏👏
Great stuff 👍🚲
Brilliant video thanks for sharing, fantastic architecture in those buildings and bridges, please keep up the good work.
Nice riding and video. Shame about the punctures, but it happens to the best of us. The muddy sections looked really bad in places. I would have walked a lot of that myself. Well done. Epic!!
I've seen a fair few cycling videos around the canals of Brum and this is by far and away the best! I'm not blowing smoke up your chimney*: it really is superb! The canals of the West Midlands, or tourist boards, or councils – someone – should promote this! You did a great job
*the most polite version I could think of when v impressed
Damn, you missed that train in Penkridge by 2 seconds!! How frustrating! It wasn't the best view in the world to sit and wait in – though your ride through all those barriers in an attempt to catch it was very impressive 😁😁😁😁
get some puncture proof tyres marathon plus that stop. you getting so many puntures
Thanks for another great and very interesting video. Lots of historical details and some serious mud-riding. Fixing a flat tire outdoors is never much fun. Nice new music!
Nice MTB ride mate its bad along that canal for punctures glad u returned into a travel lodge and got some rest
A very interesting tour of the infrastructure that post industrial revolution Britain was built round. Shame the delays put you on the road at the end, but who knows what mud-bound hell awaited you on the towpath, good call. Clocks changed today, so at least we will have more time in the evenings for a few months.
Hi again what did you put under the telephone box was it a calling card or something
Great video very interesting canal full of history and such a pleasure to ride, thanks for sharing it!
Wonderful cinematography which compliments the architecture, thank you MT 😊
Beautiful film, skilfully and tastefully put together, as always from you.
As for tyres, I have tried Tannus non-pneumatic, which cannot possibly puncture, but could not recommend them. Schwalbe Marathon Plus are a bit stiff / heavy but also highly puncture resistant, so these are the compromise on most of my bikes.
Excellent video, thanks again for taking the time.
Another well crafted video. Looked tough with mud & closed towpaths. I also loved the air piano. Thanks Madison.
Great stuff – vid quality is amazing in 2k – I guess you upgraded your camera from a while back?
Really nice video as always BUT please try and stay away from the edge of the towpath my wife gets quite concerned when you get close to the water ,we would hate for you to fall in the canal .
