These three mega-projects could have transformed London… if they hadn’t been cancelled.
Number 3
The Garden Bridge
There was supposed to be a footbridge across the Thames right here, from Temple station to Southbank, covered in trees and flowers, designed by Thomas Heatherwick. It was meant to be privately funded, and although 70 million pounds were already raised, it was scrapped in 2017 without a single brick being laid. Or, whatever material was supposed to be used to build it.
Number 2
SkyCycle
This ambitious project was supposed to bring a 136-mile network of raised cycle paths above train tracks through London, each route carrying up to 12,000 cyclists an hour. It was proposed after a number of cyclist casualties on London roads, and the project was backed by Network Rail and Transport for London, with Norman Foster’s firm on the design. But the project was cancelled due to its high costs.
Number 1
The London Sphere
This was supposed to be an identical clone of the MSG Sphere in Las Vegas, built here in Stratford. Standing 90 metres tall and wrapped in the world’s largest LED screen, it could host up to 17,500 guests. In 2023, it was scrapped over concerns about light pollution.
Which of these projects would you like to see come true?

The garden Bridge was a half baked rip off of the High Line in NYC. instead of repurposing a disused space, Boris thought building a brand new thing made sense; which is doesn’t. while it would be fun to cycle on a high up route, it seems over engineered. i imagine it would have encouraged the haters even more. The Sphere was realised in Las Vegas and it has been a hot mess financially. London is not Las Vegas. i’m kind of glad all of them didn’t happen
Garden Bridge scrapped by a jealous Kahn. It would have been great for London and brought in many more tourists.
Can you imagine if the Victorians had said, 'we're not building Tower Bridge, that design is just fantasy.'
I was really sad when the garden bridge didn’t happen- that would have been cool
Light pollution in London? 😂
I think all 3 would be great for London
Absolutely the biking network, this will save a lot of time and in fact reduces traffic since many people would shift to bikes if they have special paths and not being scared of cars on roads!
The issue is who’s manor of London saying there’s no money I wonder who is spending it
1. Big waste of money.
2. Too ludicrous. And expensive.
3. Yeah. Tacky.
#3 Garden bridge would have been absolutely beautiful.🌿 Some government idiot yet again doesn't know what the people need. I've used Temple station many times and right on the Thames. But what happened to the £70 million?? 😮
None do it sattilite town
Net zero ensures we don't have anything nice because energy is the foundation of having resources. The scarcity of resources we have is self-inflicted.
Thank goodness.
I want NONE of them to be built!
Speeding down that cyclist highway could've been so fun
Whats wrong having SkyCycle project??
If Not 136 miles…At least 50 miles of length could have been achieved. It make sense for a city like London.
Skycycle project needs Re-planning and should be implemented for At least 50 miles of Total length if not more. And implement where it's actually needed.
The cycle route. I haven't ridden in years and this would encourage me to take it up again and enjoy cycling
I want to see the garden bridge be made and it's doable!
For once all good money well saved and if cyclists want their own special highway well they can pay for it nothing is free in this world other road users have to pay everything it’s about time the cyclists started paying for the privilege of using the road everything from vehicle tax to insurance to parking charges no more freebie’s.
The Sphere would have been awesome. Hopefully proposal will be made for it again, or something like it.
None of them, London skyline has been ruined by too much development.
