After almost 2 years of thinking about it, planning it, and telling myself “one day,” I finally did it.
Today I completed my first ride over 50 km — actually 66 km — in South Iceland.
One thing I’ve realized is that I never really felt ready for it. For two years, I kept thinking I needed to be a little stronger, a little fitter, or a little more prepared before attempting it. There always seemed to be another reason to wait.
I honestly don’t know how to describe the feeling. It’s not even about the distance itself. It’s the fact that this was something I had wanted to do for so long, and despite never feeling completely ready, I finally decided to go for it.
The ride wasn’t perfect. There was wind, tired legs, and moments where I questioned why I signed up for this challenge in the first place. But crossing the finish and seeing 66 km on my bike computer made every kilometer worth it.
What surprised me most was the joy afterward. Not because I broke any records or achieved anything extraordinary, but because I proved to myself that being “ready” isn’t always what matters. Sometimes you just have to trust yourself and start.
For experienced cyclists, 66 km might not sound like much, but for me it’s a huge milestone and a memory I’ll keep for a long time.
Just wanted to share this with people who might understand the feeling. 🚴🇮🇸
Thanks for reading.
